Sis' turn is next week in 7A. She'll be hunting with a Jr. Licence, so she'll be cutting her ol' man's tags. Lucky for her, the ol' man got a lot of LEH's this year. ;)

Nice buck, congrats. You may need a second job for all your son's mounts.

You may want to be careful with the senery picks, I've almost got your spot figured out. M&T's offspring may have another hunter after it. :) lol.
Congrats on another nice animal.

Neat to see that he has almost all of his winter coat yet still velvet. Cool. We saw a number of bucks today but all were still summer coats and it was 50/50 on velvet.

Just figured I'd share some local scenery. 2 days worth of hunting and only a half a tank of gas. Gotta love having success in cut patches I layed out about 10 years ago. :)

How close did he get in on him Steve?

Glen,
We were sneakin and peekin' along some winter logged keyhole patches I layed out about 10 years ago. It's nice the ESSF grows slowly, it keeps the hunting good for a lot longer. ;) As we crept along a trail connecting 2 patches, we bumped 3 bucks watering in a little swamp. They didn't act too alarmed, so we gave them a good 10 mins and hoped they would feed out into the cutpatch we were heading for. We then slowly worked our way up the trail and when we got to the patch, the 3 bucks were about 100 yards from us, 1 spike, 1 little forky and this guy.

Steven

Steven,
The packin is actually getting easier the older I get. Cody can pack out a good portion of his own meat now. On this one, I did the gutless method and quartered the buck right where it died and split it between equally between the 2 packs. I should have given more to Cody as he didn't seem phased by the weight. Maybe more meat would have slowed him down as he ran from huckleberry bush to huckleberry bush eatin the berries as he went.

Dino,
Cody is 13 now. I started taking him out shed hunting and the such when he was about 7 or 8. We kept er simple though until he was about 10. But it was last year that I saw a huge difference in how far he could go and how much he could pack.

Please pass along congratulations to Cody on that fine buck.

It's always great to see the next generation of hunters out doing what we love and great to see parents taking the time and energy to teach them.

A tip of the hat sent your way for taking your kids out as well.

Well done all around. 8-)

That ol' rifle has a ton of history in our family. It was my dad's stepfather's. He shot a lot of game with her. When he passed, the rifle became my dad's, and he too shot a ton of game with her. When my older brother was old enough to hunt, he started with her and killed his first deer with her. He was still using her when I started hunting so I didn't get to shoot my first deer with her, but I did shoot my second and a whack of critters since then with her. One Christmas when things were really tight and there wasn't a lot of money for presents, my dad gave her to me with a card that said, pass this on to your son or daughter. A few years ago, I did just that. I told Cody to do the same with his childern.

With the amount of game that rifle has killed, it sounds like it's going to need a new barrell soon:wink:.
I now the old timers never did a pile of practice shooting. Bullets were meant to kill animals. My Dad has the same rifle and I bet a box of shells would last him 10 yrs...killing a couple of animals a yr.

Hang on to that rifle as it's not only a family heirloom, it seems to be good luck!8)

Cody....you are one lucky young man to have a father like Dana teaching you the ropes. There aren't a lot of dad's out there that take the time to spend
" Quality time " with their kids. You will look back many years from now and thank your dad for such times. I often wish my dad had taken me on his huntin trips....although he did manage to infect me with the fishing bug pretty good.:mrgreen:

Dandy buck there son.
