well after all the scouting in the last 2 weeks and seeing numerous good bulls, i went out after school in hopes of getting one of the big guys, but being a hunter for the first legal animal to come by, i was not going to pass up anything. i arrived at my spot by 5pm and after doing the little walk to one of the trails, i decided it was too early to sit and wait so i went for a little looksee around. well i spot a nice spike bull and after a while of following him down the trail it turns out he went right passed where i was originally going to sit, i lost sight of him several times but was able to spot him again feeding slowly towards the watering hole, when he made it to the hole for a drink i made my stalk, what a perfect stalk it was, there was one huge tree between him and i and i kept his arse end in sight, when i made it to the tree i was about 30 yards from him and when his head went down for a drink i was on full draw in about .05 of a second and sank the pin behind his shoulder and hit the trigger. the arrow flew straight and true and found both lungs, he bolted about 60 yards full tilt and stopped and turned to look at whatever just hit him, he staggered back towards me and fell over. done.
he weighed in at a small 230 on the hook. perfect for my wife and i.
it was one heck of a job getting him in my truck to.
pics will come when i can get them off my phone. sorry for that but i thought i would help you GH get pumped for the big ones.

Congratulations.....any animal with a bow is a job well done. But to do a ground stalk rather than sitting in a blind or a tree stand on an elk is a testament to your skill. GOOD JOB.

just want you all to know that dragging this elk was serious exercise, especially with a heart problem. My wife was a little worried when i phoned her and told her that i was alone, but it all worked out for the best. i am glad i got my elk, this is also the same spot where i saw a 6x5, 5x5 and a single antlered 4 point, when i was following my spiker through the bush he led me past at least a dozen rubs from elk, so this guy was the first unlucky one to walk by me, i wasnt going to pass him up by any means, i am going to take one of my friends in there in hopes of the big one coming down the trail.

oh ya i forgot to tell ya , when i was sitting there looking at the elk down i turned and looked back up the trail and there were two 4 point WT coming down for a drink, i originally thought i was going to arrow one and after i knocked another arrow i thought better of it. they both came to about 25 yards before they noticed me with no face mask on or anything sitting against a tree, i had ample time and opportunity to draw and arrow one of them too.
i think if i were in better shape i would have taken one, i may go back this week-end and see if they are still using the trails. but i really do like waiting for the snow to start falling.

Congratulations on some fine meals there. Sounds like there's lots of game opportunity where you are. You should have no problem filling your tags.

Smart decision on holding off on the deer. They'll be there another time. I, too, have a heart condition and am not supposed to hunt alone plus I've got to carry some nitro spray - just in case.
