Ok so im going to be doing alot of quadding with my 2 year old daughter in hunting season. Obvioiusly firing my .270 anywhere near my daughter will be to loud and my .22 is not enough for deer. So im picking up a .410. Would a .410 Slug at 1780fps be enough for a deer within a reasonable distance 50-75 yards. And would it be reasonably quiet enough? Im not actually planning on hunting a deer specifically with a .410 but if the situation arises that i cant pass up a buck will it do?

A shotgun must be 20ga or larger and have No 1 buck or larger for deer in BC - see page 16 in your regs. Would it work? Certainly if put in the right spot at close range, but not legal. And not much quieter than a .270 anyway.

And I don't believe they make slugs for 410's.

Yeah, they do but I'm not sure what they would be good for other than a survival situation - even then I'm not convinced

they make 410 slugs, using them for deer is illegal

Never even thought to check regs for that. Makes sense though that its not allowed.

What about those survival guns that shot a 44 would that be illegal. Not the I would try it unless I was ten feet away

Also aside from a .22 not being "enough for deer" it would also be illegal as a rimfire cartridge.

You've all been tricked!
A .410 is not smaller than a 20 guage, since .410 is not a guage, but a calibre. Technically it is a .410 calibre centre fire. And yes, it will kill a deer or even a moose for that matter. It's just that we don't want people using it that way anymore than we want snowmobiles on the cross country ski trails and motor bikes on the mountain bike trails or even cars on the sidewalks. Sort of unethical wouldn't you say?

Or is it still a shotgun that physically measures smaller than a 20 ga even though it is measued in inches? Either way I would say it is safe to say it is both illegal and unethical for deer, but go ahead and try it on a grizz if you get the chance:tongue:

I'd bring the 270, in case if the situation arises that you can't pass on, just teach her how to wear a good pair of muffs.

I have a "survival" gun that shoots 45 Colt and 410.
The 45 Colt would be OK for a deer only at short range as the ballistics of the 45 are like a lead baloon's and the gun just has a bead sight so anything over 50 yards and it's a hope and prayer. They don't recommend using 410 slugs in it so it's just a grouse gun in 410.

mabe try taking the wife and kid to a sand pit or logging road some where and try getting the lady with the kid a long way away, bang a round with the 270 and see what the kid does. Just like training a gun dog. I dunno but it might work. only if the kid has a seat on the quad and not in a backpack, so you could take a few steps away. mabe work?

I totally agree - both my girls are now used to wearing ear protection and won't even let me fire up the table saw unless they "have their ears on" nevermind shooting without them...

You could try a 45/70 with a heavy cast lead bullet loaded to subsonic velocities. In addition I'd still use good ear protection. My 3 year old has been taught the importance of good ear protection and he also wants to use it every time we do something that makes lots of noise.

A .410 slug is about 90-110gr for the most part

You can load a 250-300gr bullet in a .45 colt and push it the same speed or faster.

The .45 Colt is a reliable killer of big game using a good bullet for the job, I don't' know about a lightweight soft lead .410 slug:mrgreen:

Thanks Chuck:

I was waiting for this responce... I brought this up to a couple CO's, well after lots of discustion and some good points both ways we all walked away without a conclusive answer. Some said shot gun still some said could be clasified as a center fire rifle. Regs a fairly vaig on this but the best responce I got was "Don't push it".
