View Full Version : Rishu's big moose

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon when we departed from Langley to the north. Our journey would take 2 days to head up. The hunting party included Glenn (Dad and son) and his son Andrew, and a new hunter Theo (Theo722). With a hopeful heart and a prayer, we began our trip.

It was the first time I've been in Region 7B. The scenery is breathtaking anywhere I went. Simply God's country.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/4b6baea4.jpg

Our hunt actually began on the third day. We went to our spot, set up the boat, and began glassing the lake. A cow moose was frolicking, without a care in the world. Glenn took a nap :p And I soon followed suit. Half an hour later, Andrew spots another moose, and as soon as he looked through the spotting scope, he saw antlers. Big ones. With that, Glenn said, "Let's go get your moose Brian."

We quickly boarded the boat and 15-20 minutes later, we got to the side of the lake and went ashore to sneak in closer. We could get no closer than 250 yards (give or take 50), and we decided we had to take the shot before the moose would start to notice. Andrew and I used some tree branches to rest our guns, and Glenn gave the signal: "Shoot on the count of 3." Broadside, we shot simultaneously on 3. His Tikka 300 WM and my well-known 7WSM. Shots were fired, MANY shots. I took four shots, of which I know two hits and two missed.

The 140gr TTSX, both recovered, weighing in at 139.5gr and 139.7gr respectively (99%+ weight retention). One lodged smack-dab in the heart, another somewhere in the upper front ribs.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/297cd17e.jpg

Andrew took 7 shots. We're not sure if he hit the moose (no bullet recovery/bullet holes?). Glenn took two shots with his M70 300 WM... and scoped himself

The moose wobbled for a very short time (seemed like an eternity), and plopped into the shallow water.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/ef1221fc.jpg

So, the usual high-fiving and congratulations were being passed out, and we started to drag the moose close to shore before we began field dressing the animal. Sure was a tough job roping a 1000+ lbs moose in the water!

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/DSC06260.jpg

We began gutting the critter and took our time. About half an hour into the job, Andrew suddenly said, "Hey dad, there's another bull." Sure enough, a few hundred yards away, there was another moose. Quickly, we got back onto the boat and started to head for this newcomer.

As I have cut my tag already, this would be Andrew's moose. This time, he made sure his shots were true. And sure enough, this would be a monster. Andrew lined up his shots and there were to be no missed shots.

Check out this big guy.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/8a61d0bb.jpg

We started gutting this animal, and another cow was walking around in the water a long ways away, and we paid no notice.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/ee4649f9.jpg

You could sense this coming: Andrew spotted another bull moose during gutting! Of course, this is Glenn's turn.

We drove to another shoreline so Glenn could line up his shot; it was quite far (300 yards or more), but the bull was situated that way, so he had no choice. He shot 4 rounds out of his M70, the moose didn't react... so another 4 out of my 7WSM (he had run out of ammo), nothing either... unfortunately, shots were missed and the bull walked away unscathed (well, at least better than having a wounded and unrecovered animal).

Imagine Theo's surprise when we came back to camp and said, "So, we got two bulls". He thought we were yanking his chain! Well, that perked his optimism and the next morning, he would claim his first ever big game animal, a spikey moose (2 shots out of 3 hit, in his Savage 300 WM).

Here's where the story gets interesting: The previous day, after Andrew and I shot our moose, it was getting dark so we had to leave it in the water (gutted) and come back for them the next day. So Theo, Glenn, and I went out to retrieve them after Theo got his spikey.

As we were working on quartering my moose (boy that chainsaw sure makes a nice bloodbath...), Theo suddenly heard a LOUD thrashing noise in the timber very close to us. The second time, I heard it too. It was then we got worried. Could it be... GRIZZLY? We sure weren't staying to find out! We made occasional yelling noises and I had my rifle at the ready. Throwing the quarters onto the boat, we got out of there as fast as we could. It could easily have been a moose or some other animal, but we sure weren't staying to find out! :D

The antler pictures were taken on the day after shooting:

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/5f7ceafc.jpg
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/e02fd949.jpg

Tried my hand at fishing for arctic grayling but had no idea what I was doing... at least I could enjoy the scenery.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/57b354d0.jpg
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/ee908655.jpg

The next few days, we attempted to bag ourselves a caribou and/or elk.

Unfortunately, all the caribou we spotted were less than 5 points (this guy was as close as it gets, but it was on the highway anyway...).

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/8daceb55.jpg
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/6bec35a4.jpg

As for elk... boy I'm still ticked off. So one evening, we walked into a trail, and we split up into two pairs. Theo and I walked the trail, noticing some nice elk tracks. We were walking carelessly when suddenly a big bull (let's just say it was a legal bull) bolted from side to side, not 25 yards in front of us. We tried to track it down but we were unsuccessful. Elk is my most favourite animal and I would have been ecstatic to bring that baby home, but alas, we were unsuccessful and would not see another elk for the rest of our trip. :(

The trip would not be without our adventures. For example, one afternoon Glenn, Andrew, and I drove onto a logging road with the quad and got stuck in mud (which actually turned out to be clay). We had to walk 1.5 hours to the truck, put chains on the truck, and drove to the quad to retrieve it. Quad had a flat tire too.

And you guys are gonna love this: I saw a coyote. Season's not open yet though...

Also, we tried to get Glenn his moose too. We did see some stupid moose on the highway but nothing came of it, of course.

Glenn was not amused.

Video of the spikey teasing us.

The three of them did some fishing on the way back in Charlie Lake (I didn't go, forgot my license ). Caught some nice looking walleye and pike.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/cdfd94fe.jpg

You don't usually have walleye/pike and moose heart for dinner as a combination...

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/7bcc5c5a.jpg
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/rishu_pepper/cd327b64.jpg

We went up north seeing a rainbow, and on the way back, we again encountered a rainbow (a pair, in fact). Our trip was marked by success and adventures, and lots of memories.

Thanks to Glenn for sharing your wisdom on bringing us to such a wonderful place and letting me be a part of your hunting party. It was a very nice gesture for you to bring us there.

Congrats for your first of many animals, Theo, and thanks for the constant food you provided me without question ;)

And of course, thank the Lord for keeping me safe from grizzlies :) and the brilliant creation You showed us throughout this trip.

4 shots then 7 shots?? at about 250yrds???
thats dangerous shooting there! shoulda hit the range up before the trip!
-Do you have any pix of you guys quartering the moose with a chainsaw???- sounds like some crazy stuff goin on!!!

Thanks to Glenn for sharing your wisdom on bringing us to such a wonderful place and letting me be a part of your hunting party. It was a very nice gesture for you to bring us there.

Rishu; I would first off like to congradulate you on your successful moose hunt. Then I would like to pose some questions to you.

1.The place that your friend took you to was my home for thirty odd years.
2.The lake you took your moose from is home to a native indian family that migrated there when small pox was an issue with the native population. This family now consists of elders only from the age of 87 to about 65. Thier sole source of food comes from this small area that you have now made public to the entire intra web. Although I'm sure they will never see your posts, I'm just as sure your posts will now cause these harmless old folks much grief when thier food supply is decimated by the info given in your posts.
3. Normally hunters tend to keep spots like this quiet and continue enjoying successful hunting trips year after year. I would like to ask what you have hoped to gain by the information you have presented? With out any regard for the local area or people that have spent thier entire life, facing the cold harsh northern winters, without all the comforts you see in down town Vancouver.
4. Another one of your statements is " after 7 shots you didn't know if you hit anything" in total by your post, your group fired 20 some odd shots at moose on this lake. I have hunted for many many years both privately and proffessionally and never have I heard of such poor shooting. You not only have made the area as known as Granville street in Vancouver but you may as well open a hamburger stand for wasted meat you most likely left behind.
5. Although I don't know you and probably never will. I hope you never find another spot like this and return to the diet of rice and eye balls I see posted above.

The NEW HUNTER is just posting pictures of his hunting trip. Could be some improvement in marksmanship from this group, but Rishu did hit 2 out of 4 shots, and most hunters have missed at one point in thier hunting career.

Glenn gave the signal: "Shoot on the count of 3." Broadside, we shot simultaneously on 3. His Tikka 300 WM and my well-known 7WSM. Shots were fired, MANY shots. took four shots, of which I know two hits and two missed.

Andrew took 7 shots. We're not sure if he hit the moose (no bullet recovery/bullet holes?). Glenn took two shots with his M70 300 WM... and scoped himself

As I have cut my tag already, this would be Andrew's moose. This time, he made sure his shots were true. And sure enough, this would be a monster. Andrew lined up his shots and there were to be no missed shots.

Well, that perked his optimism and the next morning, he would claim his first ever big game animal, a spikey moose (2 shots out of 3 hit, in his Savage 300 WM).

ok Willy maybe you can point out where someone who was tagged out, did some more shooting at moose?

My only question is. As hunters in this province, we are sportsmen who are constantly viewed by nonhunters and anti's as killers and decimators of wildlife populations. Should we be presenting the kind of image HIGHLIGHTED by Tod Bartell on a public forum. Then put forth in media and print, the fact that we are trying to promote more hunters in the Province. How do we as resident hunters hope to have any degree of success in accomplishing our goals of doing this. Let me remind you, one story of carnage by it self will ruin multiple stories of single shot ethical kills.
My local concern is the native family. I'm sure by the pictures posted and information given thier existance is going to somewhat suffer. These people live totally off the land, they tan hides to make footwear and survival gear. I know them all personnally and have the highest regard for what they have lived through and accomplished. I've never regarded hunters as sportsmen and hunting as a sport. Hunting as a sport, in my impression, is always for rich people. Firing multiple shots at a game isn't illegal as long as Rishu didn't shoot out of a banana clip. There is a reason for the law to allow you to carry a gun that holds 5 rounds. Otherwise we can push for single shot hunting rifle legislation, and that for sure will make some ethics whores feel better. For those who claim that they have never fired a second shot to kill a game or have never lost a game in their lives, I always wonder if they 'hunt' inside a barn. For those locals who are afraid of losing their 'honey holes', I can only advise them to buy those crown lands to privatize.

Nice moose, Rishu!

I spent quite a while speaking with the old native ladies and the old fellow that lives with them (an American, IIRC) last time I was up there. From his stories about the moose meat we were watching them smoke and preserve, he indicated that he didn't hunt at the lake, but traveled to the north side of the highway to get their moose. The indian ladies don't shoot them, he does. The native ladies smoke and process them.

Ergo, I doubt that there is any impact from the LEGAL harvest of moose by BC resident hunters at the lake, or anywhere in the area for that matter. I don't recall reading in the regulations that a WHITE American was allowed to shoot moose for his native girlfriends, but if Willy chooses to support the illegal harvest of moose by a white American and chooses not to support the LEGAL harvest of moose by BC resident hunters, I guess that's his choice. 8)

Bill,

Allow me to answer your questions:

1) You must enjoy the area, it's a beautiful place up there.
2) We did actually run into one of the Native person up there. We had a good chat and he gave us some pointers about where to find other animals. We helped each other with our boats/quads. The exchange was very cordial. He seems like a welcoming guy and knowledgeable person.
3) All I said was Region 7B. That's a big area. If you can figure out the place by looking at the pics, great, but I'm sure less than a handful of HBC members can.
4) Please read carefully. I myself shot exactly FOUR rounds at the animal, hitting it twice, once in the front rib and the other in the heart (both bullets recovered). The 7 shots were fired by Andrew, a 14-year-old young man (who has harvested many animals before). Who knows, maybe the excitement got the best of us. Last I heard, missing is not illegal. We killed the moose without it suffering much (it died within 1 minute). There were no wasted meat.
5) I have no comment.

At least one of them already had a Moose. Did he not? How is it legal for him to shoot at a second moose? Please explain.

After the first moose was shot by me, I cut my tag, then I never fired another shot in the next 8 days. Andrew shot and killed his moose (the second one). What is the problem here?

I have as much concern for the Natives' plight as the next guy, but last I know, we killed 3 moose out of the many that still reside there. And it's not like the Natives there aren't doing very well, the guy has a quad and normal clothing. Granted I don't know them as well as you claim, but I do not believe showing these obscure pictures will lead ANYONE to know this area's existence, thus leading to a mass moose massacre. Besides, there is game management by the Ministry of Wildlife, setting limits and guidelines on what to shoot/when to shoot. If you want to chastise me for my bad shooting, fine, I'll take the blame for that, but please do not use unwarranted reasons to attack me personally and my ethnicity, which I take offense to. Thank you for your time.

You did not meet all of them then... and further more, if you had met any of the "old" ones I highly doubt you speak Beaver and I highly doubt you would have understood a word any of them said. I've known them since I was a child and I don't understand a word they say aside from a bit of sign language that I can decipher.

You've got no idea the relationship my family had with them, who they are, what they do, their history, or anything else for that matter aside from one meeting where it sounds like Russ bs'ed you for a while. If you kept talking to him I am sure he would have told you the story about him landing on the moon. They can spin some good ones.

Quite a bit of history with that band and they are probably one of the hardiest bunch of people I've ever personally met. I hold an incredible amount of respect for them and what they have had to endure over the years. I find it funny, you have one chance meeting and are all of a sudden an expert on who they are and what they do!

I congratulated Rishu on his Moose. They each took a great bull. But I'll be honest, it sucks to see a spot you've enjoyed since childhood have the shit shot out of it and then revealing pictures posted on the provinces busiest hunting site. I'd be lying if I said that didn't irritate me a little, and most of you would be too!

That particular spot isn't really big enough for more then 1 group of hunters at a time without putting yourself or the other party into some potentially dangerous situations. Throw in the fact there about 40 head of the natives horses running around in there as well and a stray bullet could be costly.

As for the natives, I know they have lived through much worse and in a few more years they will most likely all be gone anyways and it won't matter... Many of the younger ones have switched to a different, much easier style of life. It's a really special place, I hope it stays that way.
