Here are a few pics from this summer's early moose hunt in Fort Nelson. I think the pictures tell the story. Enjoy.

thats where a lot of "the swamp donkeys" get whacked :-P, right on an oil lease road! alongside a pipeline right of way!

beats hell out of dragging them out 3 or 4 klms out of a floating "muskeg", all the while being eaten by millions of mosquitoes and yellow jackets:-(

congratz on a tasty young "swamp donkey"

Is that a freezer on the front of the one trailer?Gen set?Running steady or just down to temp? What did you use,or how did you deal with the heat?I like the ones on the road,it makes all the hard draggin' ones seem a distant memory!!good job!

Nice eating Bull Phil. congrats. You have quite a camp setup, freezer included. I guess you do not have to worry about spoilage..

Thanks guys. That is a deep freeze on board the trailer. I ran the freezer to cool the quarters to buy a little extra time in the bush before having it cut by a local butcher. The butcher froze it solid after cutting and wrapping. I ran the generator during the day while driving home with the meat but shut it down over night while sleeping. If you're looking to keep the meat cool not frozen so you can cut it at home I have a device I bought on line to turn the freezer in to a cooler. It will hold the freezer at any temp you desire. I got the idea from Mr. Dean who built his own.

Congrats on the Moose:razz:
You are so right, the pics tell more of the story than you think. I tried to stand in your prints to take this pic, but I don't think my camera is as good as yours. Look familiar?

Nice spot, but you guys missed a trail, just up the road from your camp, that would take you right down to a very nice spot on the river:smile:

heh, heh, heh:smile: I also just love it, when I see pics of someones camp or kill site and recognize it!, for those that spend a lot of time on back roads or in remote areas quite often familiar pictures surface on these threads, one of the perks for living up here ! ;-)

Nice pics RD! Sure does look familiar. Good detective work and a little creepy:p. I tried to get a little closer to the river at the start of the hunt and did notice a trail along the creek on the main FSR but had already killed my moose. Is that the trail you speak of?

Phil

Here are a few more scenic pics of a river that I have no doubt RD will know the name of if he can can identify a small patch of dirt I camped on.

Enjoy.

Not creepy at all, that spot is less than 6 kms from where I'm sitting right now. It took me less than 5 min to drive to your camp spot this morning:smile:. You drove right by my worksite on your way in and out. I actually thought about stopping in at your camp to say hi (I had no idea who it was camped there, I just assumed it would have been someone I know from town). I drove past you a couple times, on my way to that second bridge, fishing after work.
The trail I mean is half way between the second bridge and the gates, about 2.2 kms from where you camped. I went to check it out yesterday, had to cut my way through some blowdowns, and walked most of the way down to the river. Some good sign in there.
Been working in this area for about 9 yrs, so I know it well. The name of the Moose you shot was "Frank" lol...........

Dunedin River, but in the interest of NOT giving away your hunting locations, I will refrain from mentioning how to get there:smile:. I never could figure out a way to get my boat through that spot:eek:.
The last time I was standing right there, I had 4 legal Moose within 50yrds of me (3 big ones and 1 small one). It was in the middle of Oct, after the rut, a couple yrs ago. This is definatly one place you DON'T want to be if it starts raining................Trust me on this .

Rd, ...I really wish you had stopped in, it would have been great to meet you. We met a number of great people while we were there incuding one fellow from Spectra Energy who was very friendly and gave us some good info. The rain sure changed things in a hurry while we were there. The road our camp was on was easily the best road around for miles. The others turned to soup and were impassable by truck and difficult with ATVs. I can't figure out how big machinery every operated on them any time but winter. The Dunedin River was one of my highlights while there. The pictures don't do it justice. Unfortunately the wind was blowing hard while we were traveling the road that leads to it and no animals were moving. "Frank" is coming to dinner tonight, I hope he behaves. When I inspected Frank for the fiirst time I found a few blow flie infested claw marks on his lower hind quarter, otherwise he was in great shape.

Thanks, I built the trailer last fall in anticapation for this trip. We had that moose on the trailer in 10 to 15 minutes after gutting. It hops along behind the ATV fully loaded with ease.

Hello Phil
I too enjoyed the photos, and Thanks for sharing them with us.That trailer is awesome, great work. One question maybe I issed it,did you winch or comealong the moose into the trailer?

The trailer has a hand crank winch on the tongue that pulls a beast into the bed. The deck tilts and the trailer actually slides under the moose rather than the moose sliding onto the trailer. I just leave it atached to the ATV and put it into nuetral. The whole rig just slides backwards. As the moose gets centered on the trailer the deck tilts back into a flat position and I lock it in with a draw pin. I can move over rougher ground with the trailer than the ATV will allow.

Nope.. I struck out on this trip regarding moose, but did add a bruin to the collection and saw a variety of cats... too bad...must not have had enough moose scent on my boots.

Ah yes, but you still got to see yet another part of this beautiful province, and had good times with a good friend. Good for you on the bruin, gonna share some sordid details?? 8)
