Hey I'm gonna be using a 30-30 to hunt this year and I was wondering what are some good quality and fairly cheap rounds to use in it. I don't really mind if they have a shorter range because it's my first year hunting so I don't think I want to shoot anything over 150 yards. Thanks for any help!

I use winchester super x 150's or 170's in mine, sure would like to give the leverevelution rounds a go though.

My 3030 seems to like Federal Powershok 170s ($20 per box).

I've finally got hold of 2 boxes of Leverevolution ($30 per box), and I'm going to see what if any difference they make this week-end.

I shoot Winchester power pts 150 grain. Very cheap at Walmart. In my gun they are very accurate (1" @ 100 yds). Tried the Hornady evolution at the range but they did not group well so dropped it for last yr. will try them again soon. I might consider using the 170 grain if you are hunting out to only 100 yds -- a little more oomph on the target. Key is to find something that works well in your gun.

I would by a couple diferant brands and try them in the rifle you are going to use, also I would stick with the 170gr bullets. when you find the ammunition that you rifle likes then your question is answered. Don't worry about getting 1 inch groups, 2-3 inch groups will be fine at 100 yards, all though 1 inch is nice, 150 yards and your starting to strech things a little far being a new hunter.

Most of all get out to the range and practice, practice, practice, from differant shoting positions.

Just about any factory ammo will probably work OK and one or two brands will shoot great. Its been my experience that lower velocity rounds tend to be more accurate and not as fussy about what you feed them.
Practicing and being comfortable with your rifle will have more impact hitting where you aim, then the kind of ammo you use. Inside 150 yards the 30/30 is a very reliable and dependable rifle for knocking down most game.

serious damage it turns a bad shot into a good shot.

I too have seen serious damage from shots that where just inside the kill zone. I think its the combo of heavy slow moving soft bullets that dump alot of there energy in the animal giving the cartridge its knock down thump.

I've shot the Winchester 170's from Walmart and they seem to shoot fine although I havn't shot anything but paper with them yet.

Check out Canadian Tire, Good selection & Cheap. 150 yds with a 30:30 is about as far as you would want to shoot. I'd try to stay closer to 100, Good Luck! My first moose was with my 30:30 at 80 yds. Knocked him on his *ss, through the heart, open sights, man was I pumped. One of my first solo hunts.

Yes I agree, I was just saying I'd like something that could shoot further if I needed it but I would prefer to shoot at 20 yards if I could, especially my first time.
