Just got back from a trip for early season moose and here's the story. It was the 4th day of the hunt and it wasn't looking too promising. We saw a large bull on the first day but didn't manage to get him and after that it was pretty dismall as far as seeing anything else! I did manage to surprise an immature bull on the third night but missed the shot (I was kicking myself for that one all night!!). We persisted in working the same area where we had seen the bull on the first day though, and on the fourth night I decided on a whim to head back into the area where we had seen the first bull (and where I got my bull last year), I pulled into the cut at last light and looked to my right... and nothing, I looked to my left and wouldn't you know it there's a bull looking at me at about 150 yards!! I go into excitement mode and jump off my quad ant pop the mag in, line him up perfectly and....pull the trigger... and ....CLICK!!...I forgot to chamber a round, DAMN!! Of course he heard the click and started to saunter towards the timber so I quickly chamber a round, line it up and... BOOM!! he doesn't even flinch and starts moving quicker for the tree line and disappears into the woods. At this point I think my scope has been knocked out, (how could I miss at that range). I decided that I had better check it out and headed for the tree line with my crappy low battery headlamp (should have checked before I left..stupid me!!). I headed into the thick stuff where I saw him walk in and couldn't see or hear a thing. At this point I'm sure I missed and am about to give up the search, but then "CRACK"! I heard something off to my right. I cautiously started working my way through the trees in the direction of the sound and as I moved could hear him trying to put distance between me and him. At this point it was getting downright dark and I was starting to freak out a bit, I'm sure some of you have been in this situation before!! Being by yourself in thick forest pursuing a wounded bull moose in the dark is quite the experience! Finally I could hear him stumbling around and his laboured breathing and knew I was getting closer. Then I heard the unmistakeable sound of the big fellow toppling over and I knew he was finished. I eventually found him still trying to get up, so I quickly dispatched him with an upclose head shot, and broke the antlers in doing so!! Stupid again!!! I left my red toque in a tree near the moose and carefully took note of the treeline features before heading back to camp to get my friends to help me get him out, there's no way I was going to gut this brute in the thick stuff, in the dark by myself!! When we returned an hour later it was pitch black and the forest didn't look anything like it did when I was there earlier! It took us over an hour to finally locate him, next time I'm taking a spool of flourescent yarn with me and leaving a path!!! By 3 AM we had him dressed out quarterd and back to camp, quite a night but one we'll all remember for a long time. A big thanks to Trevor, Joel, Jay and Lorne for their help, it would have been one heck of a job without you guys!!! All in all a great start to the hunting season!! Here he is...

Congratulations. That's a nice moose. Did you get him processed up there or bring him him home to process? How do you keep a critter cool this time of year so he doesn't spoil?

Great Hunting story, glad you got him out safely without having to fight bears.

The Moose has a nice chocolate brown colour, not so much grey, at least in the picture.

I left him in the truck overnight and got him to the butcher ASAP in the morning, it's pretty cool in the evenings up there.

It was a heck of a job getting him out, around 4 hours to get him back to camp, and yes I'm sweaty and tired from hiking the bush trying to find him. Totally worth the effort!

Those moose are very unique beasts. Unable to hear the quad, but spook at the sound of a dry fire?

Good job on the nice looking bull, no doubt he will be very tasty and enjoyed over many dinners to come.

Looking for downed game in the dark does very much suck indead!

Mr. Dan,

So I guess you know Colin too? Do some business with him. Right now its mainly drinking beer occassionally when were in Van at the same time. Last time we're having drinks and i tell him where i get my moose done and I look at him and a light bulb over my head starts to flicker on... only briefly though.:o

Great post! Yep---cleaning moose in the dark is a real treat! Looks like your bud had his defender with him--wouldn't a grizzly in the dark be such fun too? One of these days we'll get a chance too---sigh.
