Last sunday we hiked up to the alpine off the coquihalla. Here's a few pics from the way up and some animals that stood still long enough to get their picture taken,http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd75/ElectricDyck/Coq%20Day%20hike/IMG_1416.jpg

I really enjoyed that , thanks. Been riding the area east of Merrit for the last few days with the horses and it has been great getting out into the woods again - i love this time of year.

Looks like a great hike. I was actually thinking of getting up in that area for a hike around. Any suggestions on where to find a good trail head that leads up into a similar area? Wondering if there are any specifically good spots to get into around coquihalla lakes or dry gulch area? I'll likely be checking it out myself this or next weekend and been looking on google maps etc as well.

It can be really good out in the bowl on the first pic. I do remember a few years back a good friend and I got up wAAY to early, drove up, and were finishing the hike into the alpine as the sun was coming up. Thought it would be a nice day out until we started hearing contiuos shooting in the small bowl just over the lip of the ridge. Took a peak, and there were 2 guys with 3 pack horses stampeding up and down the bowl while they were shooting stumps and cooking up a greasy breakfast. Still Drunk from the night before, and when we talked to them they told us that they had the 3 horses because they neede "2 for the gear, 1 for the beer" Needless to say, not a lot moving out there that day. A few grouse as a consolation prize for the hike...

Lots of nice trails within a couple hours drive that get above the treeline if you do a little research. Hiking books can be helpful as can google.
