And again... Another year goes by for my partner and I without a ram. We saw quite a few sheep, lots of sign but only found 1 legal ram and he was a 7.5 year old squeeker, good for pics and that's about it.

The weather was crappy for the first few days with us being holed up in our tents due to heavy rain, fog and even snow, visibility was not good.

One resident did connect with a pretty hammer ram, hiking in off the highway, we saw the pictures of him. A very impressive ram, I hope some pics surface on here.

All was not lost though as we were able to connect on a couple of young bull moose, with my partner and I each taking a fork bull within 12 hours of each other. That ended the hunt pretty quick and we had to begin the long trek home.

Some pics

The squeeker. What was unusual was that he was all alone, he was walking with a slight limp. He had some pals somewhere on the mountain, LOTS of trails in and out of the timber and lower brush, which is where I spend most of my time glassing for my ram.

A couple of mountain goats.

It was a 2 day hike, and the MR pack was great with a 65lb load, the hip pockets are the best.

http://www.bchuntingblog.com/mypics/sheep09/hiking1.jpg

It was incredibly foggy, and pretty cold in the mornings, just as cold as a september hunt.

http://www.bchuntingblog.com/mypics/sheep09/foggy.jpg

My little bull... The shot was much further than what I would should have shot. He's dead though and not lost in the bush somewhere.

My partner with his Moose. A great shot through the neck/spine put him down in his tracks. We floated him down river with a lifejacket wrapped around his head. Worked great.

The moose machine, 12.4 aquamarine inflatable w/aluminum floor and brand new Yamaha 9.9 (Thanks Dad) We were able to haul 3 guys and our moose no problem, easy to handle and assemble.

2010 is yet another year to plan for in our quest for some BIG rams.

Happy Hunting

Awesome experience. Prefer the bullwinkle over the ram any day IMO.

Congrats on the young moose, they are always the best IMHO.

We cooked the rib meat over the fire the night of the first moose. It was tasty with some Garlic salt.

They are pretty small moose though, both bulls together was under 400lbs to the butcher. We kept the backstraps and tenderloins to take care of ourselves. Next year I think I'll wait for a slightly bigger bull :)

When you can pack a moose quarter with one hand, it's not a large moose!

He needs a few more years to develop his mass, but he does come from an area with good genetics. Too bad we didn't find the band of rams that I am presuming won't let him in for whatever reason.

Carl, How did you like your new pack?

It worked out great, it was loaded with about 65lbs including my rifle. I'll be posting a much more technical review on my own website. I'll post a link in my MR thread when I write it.

You will be happy with your Thorlos. I always buy new pairs for the mountains, so every sock change is a brand new pair. Makes a big difference in how my feet feel. Good luck on your fly-in!

I spent a lot of $$$ on socks until I tried the Thorlos.

Congrats on your moose. For the quest for Mr big, I guess it wasn't meant to be this year, but any trip in the mountains is a good trip.

Where can you find Thorlo socks? I would like to check them out. The wife and I are heading to Vancouver next month. Is there a store there that carry's them?

I know MEC carries them, I order them online for $22.00 a pair I think?

You can also order direct from Thorlo and they often have specials, and will ship to Canada cheaply. These socks are hard to beat!

Don't wear them around the house though, the fibers will not stand up to that abuse, they are meant to be worn in a boot.

I expext that Zodiac looked pretty good at the end of your day. I know I have looked down from mountain tops at my boat and sure have been relieved when you sit down, pull the cord and take off without having to watch where you put the next foot down.

Thanks everyone! Tomorrow is the wife and I's anniversary and she wants me to make This (http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=34785) out of the Moose tenderloins.

Congrats on the moose Carl and your buddy, thanks for the great pics. How close were the Goats?

The picture of the goats was taken by my partner, through his Leupold gold ring. I would say 1000 yards? He can take pretty good pics through his scope, but my canon camera through my zeiss turns up like crap, it will focus really good at first and then within 1/2 a second the camera image gets really bright in the center and only the edges show???

Carl, try putting your camera on "timer" mode and then hold it as still as possible when the camera finally takes the picture. This way you aren't moving the camera when the picture is taken.

What causes the situation you are talking about is the movement caused by pushing the button....the movement makes the camera re-focus. Some cameras are more sensitive than others....

giver a try....it works well for me. http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/IMGP0545_resize.JPG

Good tip bud.

Thanks for sharing the results of your photo-safari and meat moose hunt Carl! Great stuff. My sheep trip was just a photo-safari too, and I even struck out on the meat moose plans at the end of it.

I bet those moose t-loin wellingtons are going to be gooooo..oooood!!

Happy Anniversary,

BCrams had more issues taking pics with his 10X Sony camera through the spotter. I think it might depend on the diameter of the lens and where it wants to focus. My little Casio Exilim faired a little better.

Yep. Whereas the previous camera I had took awsome photo's through the spotter.

With the size of the zeiss eye piece it's easy to get my camera fitted properly, it's just the damn bright light in the middle of the picture. It even does the same with my Sony videocam which has Zeiss lenses.

I will try the timer setting, it's frustrating as my partner and some other members on here can take pretty amazing pictures through a spotter. It would be awesome if I could capture some more of that.

Don't get your sony damp! it will be screwed... My last sony foobared on my sheep hunt last year, the most widely adopted fix on the sony technical forum was to slam the camera down on a desk 3 times. Did it, it worked for another 3 months then packed it in.

This was the best pic I could get through the Zeiss.

Here is the evidence for anyone who doubts a moose will float. According to the captain at the time it tows waaaaaaaaaaay better with the life jacket wrapped around it's head. Helped cool the meat down real quick too!

Carl

Have you tried putting the camera in Macro mode? I find that the camera focuses better in Macro mode then it does in regular picturing taking mode.

You can also play with the zoom of the camera to get rid of the black around the lens. I usually take a lot of pics this way and you are bound to get some blurry ones. One out of 20 turns out real good.

This photo was taken at about 30m through a bushnel spotting scope with a point and shoot Casio on Macro mode.

It was a successful trip for sure.I already am looking forward to next year!!

We did our best to be sheep hunters not sheep herders:D like previuos years and it was nice to see a couple rams up close in the spotter.

The two little moose will be excellent eats for sure, the tenderloins were pretty much falling apart in my hands cutting them out.
Moose do tow much better with the lifejacket on it keeps the head from dipping down under the prop wash, plus we wouldn't want him to drown:cool:

A big thanks to Carl's Dad again this year for rigging us up for moose, all the gear was put to use fully. To bad he couldn't make it up to join in the fun.Plus all the advice and inspiration to get up in the mountains and look for sheep.
