I was out scouting a bit tonight in a spot I've never hunted before. Let's just say, I think I may start hunting there (and hard!), after the buck I saw this evening!!!

The pic's are a bit grainy (lots of zoom in low light = bad combo), but you can easily tell he's got "shooter" written all over him (especially out here in the EK, where whitetails much north of the 100 inch mark are fairly rare). I'd guess him right at the 150 inch mark, give or take a dozen, but I'm lousy at this sort of thing. Why don't you experts have a guess at him for what you think he'd score.

140 max I would say

He just looks bigger than that to me... but maybe not.... As I said, I'm lousy at this. He's quite a bit farther past his ears than the one The Wife(tm) shot year before last (grossed about 152, net about 144), but then I guess the one The Wife(tm) shot had a couple of extra points that this guy doesn't (about 11 inches worth), that even 6 extra inches the spread credit wouldn't make up for...

Heck, I dunno -- I just know that if you're hunting in the East Koots, and you see a deer like that and don't shoot him, you're a fool! :)

maybe 140 but thats max, and that was sarcasm about the north of 100 right.

OK, maybe a little sarcasm about the 100 inch thing -- but not that much -- the EK isn't exactly a hotspot for giant whitetails like they grow in other areas (AB, SK, etc).

Other side note -- The Wife(tm) says this one looks a lot like the one she saw last year during bow season but never got a clean shot at (I like to tease her that she passed him up). He wasn't all that far, geographically speaking from where that one was (other side of the same mountain). What you guys think -- possibly the same deer, a year older?

EK not having nice bucks? I dunno, i have seen some great WT bucks that have come from the EK, but it is a large area. He's definately a shooter in my books. I have to agree with everyone that he would be a 140 buck.

135 - maybe 140. Velvet always makes 'em look bigger than they are. Whatever, my season would be a huge success with that guy in the freezer! :-P

The pics do look like they could be the same deer. As for score, I'll give you 138. its only a 4 piont.

So, I went through a score chart, filling in the measurements as I'd guestimate them. You guys are probably right -- I got 140 inches exactly. Still doesn't make him any less a shooter in my book, though. :)

I've seen some nice ones from the EK too, but not nearly so many from the EK as from AB, SK, etc, and I've never seen any from the EK that were even close to the 200+ inch deer they occasionally shoot other places.

The EK whities are a different subspecies from the AB/SK/Peace ones. The flatland deer are Dakota whitetails, and tend to grow more bone.

Regardless, that is one fine buck - you better spend some time watchin' him until opening day, BJ. ;-)

Don't hesitate to shoot him Brotherjack. He's decent for the EK. I've seen dead ones at the butcher in jaffery years ago that were around 155" to 160". theres for sure the odd one still around that should make book. Maybe check the golf course in Cranbrook?.

Oh, don't worry, I'm nowhere near picky enough to pass up a deer like this guy!!! If he'll hang out in the same area till hunting season, you can rest assured, he'll be as good as dead if The Wife(tm) or I ever get a good bead on him. :)

I'd say ~ 120. Looks more massive because of the velvet. Definately a nice buck for the EKs. It kinda sucks that there aren't bigger whitetails in the Kootenays...oh well, I guess the big mulies make up for it.
