Why didn't he take a pung at a ram too?

Thanks all...I will keep trying to post some more photos..I still get goosebumps realizing what Scott , Kevin and I accomplished..a ram was nice this ram makes it amazing for me..32 pounds lost getting "ready" for this hunt 22 while on the hunt....

I also APPRECIATE the kind words from Willy442 regarding this ram photo...and Willy442 DOES know stone sheep...

Fantastic timing that my last stone sheep hunt also gives me a sheep of a lifetime..I promised I would not leave "anything in my tank" when I came down from the mountain.....the night I arrived back in camp I literally collapsed..

Kevin Willis runs a hell of a great TRANSPORTER company he is not a guide...but there were a LOT of goats, elk stone sheep in his area.. we saw well over 70 RAMS..over the area.....lots of spots for Kevin to drop you off at..

I failed for 16 years..but succeeded only once at stone sheep...but I learned so much from those other trips...I proved what wouldnt work..

And who knows without a GREAT hunting partner in Scott what would have been...THANKS SCOTT....you were there for me every step of the way..

hopefully more photos today and some scenery pics also..

NICE ram you have there sir. Beautiful looking country as well.

When you go see Harley, don't spend too much time looking at his trophy's. You could be there all day  And his story telling is second to none. You will leave there in tears of laughter.

Great choice on having your trophy done by him. You wont be disappointed.

Congratulations!! I don't post here very often, but I do pay attention to what's going on. Of all the members on this site whose opinions and knowledge I have come to respect you are NO. ONE !!
Nobody could deserve it more. Having made 7 trips for stones before I got one I can appreciate how you feel.
Are you getting a shoulder mount, or lifesize maybe?

srupp
08-15-2009, 11:45 AM
yes I get that from my wife..you are NO ONE..

It is going to be a shoulder mount right turn..just like on the mountain...I can only afford a shoulder mount..still on strike..BUT he does deserve to get done up...and nobody has anything negative to say about Harleys work on sheep..

someone asked about the rifle..it is a Browning stainless steel rifle with synthetic stock, stainless action barrel...it was completely worked over and accurized by Rick @ Alberta Tactical...it now shoots 5 shots in under 1" @ 100 yards..

The scope is a brand new leupold Boone and Crockett model..3.5x10 with the sunshade screwed in on front and the custom leupold scope flip up covers..

You may have to expand the Trophy room. Remember a couple more years and you will have to find room for an Antelope and more Whitetails.

thanks Joe..tell Conrad Ill just have to try harder ..

jml11 this angle with Scott who is 6'4 shows the mass and how this ram carries that mass well into the 3rd quarter..looks more like a Cali bighorn mass..and the w i d e even curl that drops so low below the jaw..this shot of Scott and OUR ram is my favorite because it does show this ram has everything great cape, color, quality of the cape...wide deep flaring with equal heavy horns and thick bases that carry their mass..it even kept its lambtips..

Im not sure about "deserving" being hurt and old and out of shape made it harder but I have to take credit for being in that condition...

Thank you it is a great ram and Greg and Jim put my mind at ease while visiting that there shouldnt be any questions of its being legal..

Srupp; No problem with your ram being legal. I get him at 9 years and although he is not that much over the nose for a 39 incher, it's because of his deep curl. With his length and mass, he is in the top 10 I've seen posted on here in the last three years. His type come from the lower elevations.

On another note I'm hearing rumors of a huge ram being taken by a northern resident that scores 181. Was taken from the timber close to the highway. I will keep digging and may come up with a photo. Carl has talked to the fellas son and seen the photo's.

Excellent ram Steven. Well worth the wait. I am wishing I was out there right now but is a no go so far this year for sheep.

srupp
08-16-2009, 09:12 PM
Hi Willy442..I know "nothing " much about stones..but in the 17 years he is THE second biggest I have ever seen the biggest is still up on that mountain he is MUCH BIGGER..more like a bighorn...but doesnt go above the bridge of the nose...

I agree with 100% of your obvious knowlege...I did get 3 hours of uninterrupted viewing of all 11 rams..and this one was my favorite..although the 3 biggest were legal...I didnt want to go by anuli although I could easily see he was 9 with the Swaro spotting scope...and yes he "just squeeked" over the nose when the hide was on..but he did..

It is also true he gains by going so low and back makes a almost perfect circle so gains the length but not much over the bridge..although at the Compulsary Inspection the head biologist used a ordinary woodworking level and held it across the tips of the horns and the clearance over the bridge of the nose was "lots"..

The mass atv the beases and how he carries it out to the third quarter ..even the final quarter has good mass...

As for "where " this ram lived... he did in fact live really high in some pretty big mountains by my standards..but seemed to move around on a feeding pattern??

Maybe it was pressure from other hunters??..

It should go without saying I was prepared to shoot any legal ram...however I am extremely happy with this guy..and I only will get one stone sheep in my hunting carreer..and am extremely satisfied with the one I was able to harvest..

cheers

Steven

Scott COULD HAVE FILLED his tag also there in fact WAS A BIGGER RAM THERE but just hard to determain anuli...I suspect he's over 11 years old  but he does NOT go above the nose however he should score mid 180's!!!! his mass is unbelievable...more bighorn than thinhorn...made mine look much smaller in mass..and its still a decent ram for mass..

hmmm Scott IS a great friend but I would like to think I also have been a great friend to Scott.....however maybe not he's not said anything on this hunt yet...perhaps I was more of a handful than I realized...

I believe Scott has other plans for his sheep tag this year..he did in fact geta stone last year..

Good for you Srupp,
I read some of your past stories and it was a feel good story to read about your success. Hunting with good people that have have the same passion as you for the hunt, can be better than the hunt it self sometimes. That is a gorgeous animal thanks for sharing your experience.

Steven not doubting what you saw or thought but sheep horns can decieve even the best. I have two bighorns on the wall and when I put the second up it looked like a runt next to the first one. When I told a friend of mine that the second is dwarfed by the first he laughed at me. Not till he came over and saw the two on the wall did he agree. He said he would have never beleived it. He even said he would guess the first ram scored 15-20 inches bigger then the second ram. The actual difference is only 1 1/2 inches. Its just the way the horns come out of the head, one is tighter while the other flares more (not just at the tips but starting at about the 1st quater.

Srupp; It would be very unusual for a 39 inch ram to score much higher than 167 with lamb tips. On the other hand it would be possible on a broomed ram due to the curcumference being measured every quarter. When the length is only one measurement, then divided by 4 and measured at the quarter it can add alot of inches sometimes. Your ram is an excellent example of a MATURE Stone Ram and something to be proud of regardless of score. You have achieved taking a mature ram, something many experianced hunters are still trying for.

SRUPP,

for reference,

using Tony Russ' chart on scoring thinhorn sheep (mainly Dalls), using the measurements for your ram (39x15) you reported it would score 170, right around what you have suggested.

Using that same chart, for a ram to be in the mid 180's......lets give it 15.5 inch bases it would have to be 45 inches long for 185 and 43 to crack 180.

The way sheep are scored is deceiving.....there is no credit for the circumfrence at the horn tip, therefore broomed or lamb tipped, the length is what really matters. For this ram you are talking about, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarter measurements are only likely to add an inch or two to each measurement, not enough to launch it into the mid 180's. ......that is, unless it is 45 inches long. .....

If it has enough mass it could easily be in the 180's. As Willy has said length is only measured once while the circ. are measured four times. If the ram has big bases and carries his weight well he could easily be a 180 class ram. I have a sheep (bighorn mind you) that is only 36 inches long and it goes in the low 180's it has big bases and carries its weight well but only has a 9 inch last quater. So it is broomed but not heavily has there are some that have 11 inch last quaters.

So if the sheep had big bases (based on Steven's having 15+) and carried its weight well it would not have to be 45 inches to be a 180 class ram.

talk regarding scores is simply to reference the animal and see just how unique a sheep is....

no one really cares much about score as you put it, the smile is all that counts.

I will gladly bow to Willy442 and such that have much more experience with scoring sheep..several knowing sheep hunters came up with a "rough 168-172 puts an average @ 170..and the bigger ram was much much thicker and much more mass but not enough length to breach the bridge of the nose..

I love how Carl put it.."a great mature ram " and yes too much talk of score..I am happy as I ever could be and exceeded my wildest imagination and the ram was enthusiastically recieved by Harley White and Regan Underwood(a old friend from williams Lake )who I know will do a masterfull job.

How blessed to have such a capable, generous individual such as SCOTT who with out him..it "may" have got done but taken much longer..I certainly did not give Scott the credit due him..thinking back..ALL the water runs were done by Scott...several times he even helped when the going got REALLY tough... with carrying way more than his fair share....and in spite of my slowness..and inabilities physically never a complaint or even a negative word from Scott just a smile..keeping me from getting discouraged.I owe it all to SCOTT...

And again a good word about River Jet Adventures...Kevin Willis runs a absolutely TOP NOTCH operation....and for the 50 or so that have e-mailed me the answer has always been the same.. well worth the time effort and expense..highly recomended...honest, capable , reliable individual with a exellent mind for saftey and incredible knowlege of the area..

I did not know how much this meant to me untill I realized I have looked at these sheep pictures every single day...and how much these two gentlemen did on my behalf..and just how successful WE were...and I wanted my friends here to know how thankfull I am...I have been given, and recieved far more from this site and the wonderful folks here than I can ever explain or return the favor...but that wont keep me from continueing to help in any way I can...

This is ridiculous crap. SRUPP has acknowledged that Scott helped him immensely in packing his gear up and the ram out. There are pics of SRUPP at the top of a mountain- So we all know he got there.

He got to the top so there is no reason why he would ask someone else to shoot the ram....

Just more complete drivel...

Steve theres always going to be one ass in a large group of people and obviously this guy gets another ribbon for repeatedly being The Big Ass.

I am just sorry you have to hear this crap from the someone who is so jealous.
Hey I am jealous to, but i have other ways of poking fun at you like the open can of sardines by your pillow in Grizzly Country or those canned Oysters a few years outdated .

You did your research , many years of it, you acheived your dream and i sure as hell know you wouldnt carry a photo of someone elses ram with you wherever you go .

I have been your invited friend when you hunted Stones in the Cassiars and was with you every step of the way as you struggled with bad Knees over each ridgeline and saw the hurt that you went through to do it.

Again I congratulate you on such a Beauty of a well earned Ram Steve and hats off to your friend Scott to help make your hunt a success. I guess thats Good Karma for all of those others you have helped to succeed in their hunts !

Cheers Bro!!

Glad to hear your reply Steve.
It is lousy that an individual on this site can't succeed in his /or her own hunting goals and wants to tarnish the rep of those who do. I appreciate your honesty and enjoyed the stories about the help Scott was able to give you , he sounds like a great partner. If you were trying to steal credit , I am sure Scotts name would not have been mentioned. I hope this person has learned a lesson we dont 't need them questioning every hunting story on this site. Well good luck in your 2010 season looking forward to everyones pictures and stories.

Awesome ram! Good job.

Forget the posts by the pinheads in the peanut gallery. Jealousy, pure and simple. Or, maybe someone needs to up the dose on their meds.

Either way, don't let them ruin a once in a lifetime hunt.

Congrats.

Pretty sad how pathetic some people can be on this site. There are certianly some very odd and petty individuals in the sheep hunting fraternity.

Steven, your sheep is great, and an inspiration to all of us who have yet to achieve the same success.

Thanks Friends. Just didnt see that one coming...it does raise a good point in just how patient and hard working SCOTT was..on my behalf and how much he did for me, I can never thank him enough . I am as Stone chaser said maybe one that shouldnt be in the mountains chasing rams..with my significant injuries...however as Scott himself said...so it takes a extra day or two to get in there..its not a sprint its a marathon..lol..By allowing me to just get in there..a significant achievement..Scott did the extras so I could save myself for the opprtunity.. and when it came to pack out the sheep, I again got the light load..the horns and the cape..Scott again taking the heavier pack with the meat..two fine gentlemen..Scott and Kevin ...

However I did make the shot, and the walk in trembling anticipation with a little fear on did I make the right call and ground shrinkage issues..what a feeling.. and will never forget that trip of a lifetime..the sheep will be a constant reminder of what others selflessly did on my behalf..and for that I assure you I will be ever gratefull.

Thank you for all those that stood up, spoke up when this Bullshit started, I truly appreciate the friends I have made here....the help I try and chime in with when asked is just helping what comes around goes around,,if one wants friends one needs to show himself a friendly,

Thanks again I have truly been blessed with friends, and a tremendous ram I will cherish for the memories it represents.

Wow a guy goes fishing for a couple days and then sees this about the guy he was just fishing with.

I got only one thing to say to all the nay sayers here on the site about Mr. Rupp!

Step up to the plate and lets see how you stand up next to him. There are not many men out there with Steve's grit and determination or his willingness to help his fellow outdoorsmen.

He is a one of a kind and one of my dearest friends who has never lied about one thing and is a straight shooter!

That been said if anyone wants to call me on it well come say it to my face!!

Anyone that can tell the same story over and over right down to the yardage on the shot, well I would say that is what happened.

Beautiful ram Steve you deserved it!!

....there's something to be said about the story of the turtle and the hare .........

I won't forget the excited phone call from Steven when he called from Fort St John wanting to stop in and show me the ram and told me to ring up Deaddog as well. A few hours later with a hot pot of coffee, Steve rolls into the driveway ..... what a sight that ram was in the back of the truck. One of the handful to have seen the ram so soon after his trip.

Deaddog showed up shortly and what a great adventure he regaled us with and he wasn't shy about the fact it took him longer, struggled ... yet achieved what he dreamed of.

What a ram! ....... he did far more than what most of us will do in a lifetime.

srupp,

Not ever meeting you before, I can not say how nice it is to see how honest you where with everyone by telling us that your hunting partner did more then his share.

As far as someone even suggesting you didn't take that ram in fair chase is out to lunch. You can not fake that lip splitting shit eating grin on your face, no how no way.

Congrats on a fantastic ram.

Wow. I haven't read all of this thread but what I've read in the parts I've looked at inspired me to comment.
A beautiful ram, an obviously happy hunter with story admitting one's limitations and acknowledging the work done be your hunting partner. Yet people have to make cheap shots, going so far as to accuse srupp of not shooting his own ram.
What is wrong with people? Does anyone ask how many of the sheep shot on guided hunts posted here were shot by the guide? This goes for pics posted by guides and clients. I've never noticed anyone question it. Why on earth would anyone feel it acceptable to question this hunt?

Congratulations on a well earned ram and the memories that will last a lifetime.

Hmmm anyone have a spare copy of this WSSOBC MAGAZINE that I could get ????

I did get lucky with this ram..as I was more than willing to pull the pin on any legal ram..but I guess after 17 years sooner or later I was bound?? to see a big ram..and this is by far the biggest stone ram I seen in the wild while out searching for them..

Well actually I still maintain that the one other ram that was so heavily broomed would have scored better ???but I liked the look of the long horns the other one looked like a Rocky mountain bighorn with mass...

and the 3rd legal ram in the gropu of 11 rams was so wide and didnt drop down so low and not the mass...

I am completely happy with my choice out of the 3 legal rams...and I wasnt going to shoot based on age...

I do have to say that once I pulled the pin and harvested the ram...I was very nervous about "ground shrinkage" and perhaps wishing the ram to be full curl versus being a teeeey weeeenie bit shy...he JUST cleared the bridge of the nose, however was 9 (9.5 ??) yesr old so made it on both horns by length and by age...

now to get the danged thing back...

Be thankful Harley has done a sheep or two in his day.
When I was going to college I was writing a paper on ungulates and was doing some research....when I noticed my GF's Dad had a nice pronghorn on his wall. They lived in Alberta for yrs but he never hunted him until after they moved out here. So, anyhoo I noticed something didn't quite look right with his mount...then I noticed that the taxi mounted the horns backwards with the brows pointing to the rear. :? I guess he got it mounted by someone on BC that had never done any pronghorns.
Needless to say the GF's father was some pi$$ed when he learned the error:mad:.

Thanks Bill..the 11 pound 3 oz rainbow was till then THE biggest bow taken in Sheridan so far this year...and did it EVER put up a scrap and peel off the backing on the reel..

Yes with a new black lab puppy I did more than a few slow laps around the campsite..and introduced EBONY to swimming..

Susan did her customary 7 MILES walk each and every day while I did a few slow laps ..sure is a beautiful lake and great camping place @Sheridan Lake Resort..we really enjoy it there..and the owners are wonderful..

You did well to pick up a nice fish like that this year. We had a hard time finding the big ones, I've never seen so many small fish there in the 26 years we have stayed there. But hopefully that bodes well for the future.

I do know that during the "deep water fishery" last year (a flop this year, which is not an entirely bad thing in my opinion) an awful pile of hogs were winched out of the hole where they were concentrated. Maybe or maybe not that had something to do with the lack of biggies this year. My largest this season was 8 3/4 lbs. The only one I had put on the "wall of fame" was a 6 lb. 2 oz. on May 10, which shows as 6 even. I just had to do it because there was yet nothing on the wall for this year at that time, Dave & Becky like a little promoting, and well, I got a chuckle out of being first up to be honest, even if it wasn't a very big fish. The last month of our stay this year I developed a severe case of kokanee fever, and didn't fish Sheridan all that much, just chased those silver beauties.

We got introduced to EBONY, what a sweetheart! When we first saw that pup making its rounds, my heart just went out to it. Labs are very, very special.

I can't say enough good about Dave and Becky. They run a good show, and bend over backward to accommodate everybody.

We are the quiet group that occupies the NW corner of the grounds.

Hey Steven,
I just Got my Sheep Magazine in the mail and read your story.

Very Cool ! Great story, well deserved.

Congrats to you again, I too hired the services of Riverjet when Guy owned it.
Great country and good operators, I took my first Stone with them also. Matter fact, the pain sounds similar to what I endured for these well deserved Rams.

Good on you!

I too will also use these guys again, for sure!

Possible they acknowledge the life style one may live, pounding their body on physically demanding hunts year after year ?
Clearly, this doesn't help...

A valid thought.

Blacktails stalker..me myself think its been 36 years of packing stretchers..got to be overhundreds of thousands of pounds lifted over those years..I dont have a desk job.. and then I have had 2 significant injuries...this last one 5 months ago was a dooozy....

I do far morew over the course of a year than even the sheep hunt entailed..my nite shifts are 14 hrs long with only 10 hrs between..48 hrs each block..

I thyink its the wear and tear of my occupation and its strenuous demands..and just old age catching up..

Bill..yes Dave and BECKY were amazing..withing 5 minutes of me showing up at the fish cleaning station they were already taking and posting advertising photos of the biggest rainbow taken this year..it was slow t the resort and also not many fish taken at all...
