View Full Version : Quest for White Sheep-"Round Two"

So it started all over again with the arrival of our LEHs in the mail....no wait...they never did arrive in the mail:roll:.
No worries. Just a drive a few towns away and standing in a lineup for a couple of hours and we were in business.

Armed with different information we were optimistic in our chances at finding a couple of white rams.

The weather forecast was as good as can be expected for a northern hunt so up we went with dreams of twister rams appearing in the next basin.
Other than 3 days of thick smoke the weather stayed true.

Enough words(save that for srupp's thread:biggrin:). Let the pictures tell the tale from here on.

I'm having a few computer issues so I'll have to add in the pics off BCRam's camera in a day or two. I promise they'll be worth waiting for.

Let the photo safari begin.

This young legal ram greeted us at our first camp and lifted our hopes of meeting his Daddy.
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Dall_Hunt_2009_027.jpg

and this ram and his buddy greeted us at our next camp.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Dall_Hunt_2009_041.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=14978&ppuser=1509)

Then the winds shifted and we got smoked out for 3 days.

These billies didn't care much for the smoke either
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Dall_Hunt_2009_084.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=14981&ppuser=1509)

Hiking around in that stuff was like smoking a couple packs a day.
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Dall_Hunt_2009_085.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=14982&ppuser=1509)

Too hot to do anything but kick back and relax.

Awoke to the sounds of something walking outside the tent at 4 am...thought it was just some ewes and lambs that were nearby at bedtime. I guess it wasn't them.
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Dall_Hunt_2009_109.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=14987&ppuser=1509)

We kinda grew accustomed to boulder hopping last yr.

Again the quest continues...................................more pics to follow....but if you want pics of dead sheep then you'll have to wait for srupp's thread! LOL!!

We were quick to name it grizzly pass. That very afternoon, SSS came running into camp while I was napping and announced a sow with 2 cubs were enroute straight for the tent a few hundred yards away from the opposite direction of the morning visitor.

It was a good ending after we worked our way upwind and she decided she didn't like the smell of stinky sheep hunters.

Very nice pictures and looks like you got to see a few more animals then last year. Was wondering if you were in the same zone as last year or did you go into the other side. The caribou shed is cool I was told there was none in the area but I guess they do go through alot of it sure looks like mountain caribou country.

Nice country and great pics you guys. I heard the smoke up north was pretty bad this year.....but you only had 3 days of it? I'm heading up next weekend for 2 weeks, hopefully it's long gone. BC Rams, post more pics!

No wonder you did not see any big rams, airing out your feet on the ridge will clear the country of anything alive.

Great pics guys ,looks like ya had the good weather, even time for sss to tan his legs:smile:

Really. I thought I was leaving the sun(and smoke) back home:rolleyes:.

DH-As BCRams mentioned we saw some grizzers the next day but I don't think it was the same bear as made those tracks. That single bear came in upwind and would not have seen or smelled our camp until he was very, very close(even with my obscene smelling socks:rolleyes:.

The smoke made for difficult glassing but made for a unique photo-op.

Bud-Yes, if that young ram lives for another 3 or 4 years(without brooming) he's going be a pretty interesting looking ram. Actually, we thought about pounding that little dinky ram just to piss Willy off;-).

We did see another mature, good-looking ram but he had one deformed horn. Looked like a big "blob" on one side. Too bad or he would have been coming home with us;-).

Saw lots of moose in the valleys below as they were being driven into the lakes by bugs. It was pretty cool watching big bull moose breaching like whales trying to soothe their antlers by slamming their heads into the water.
They would leave the water but only for an hour or so before the biting insects became too much for them. Poor buggers.

Saw some dandy goats as well.

Ahhhh...that's what you think. If you squint you can see some rams bedded in the background in that pic. Thought a veteran sheephunter would notice that:p.
I betcha you noticed my "sheep-killing" "TH" shirt in that same pic:lol:.

As for the Wilderness Wanderer, always seems to need some lovin somewhere along the line. This year with me, was the mesh backing @ the shoulder blades totally shreading apart. This Mystery Ranch thing is sounding better everyday.

Funny thing is that my hipbelt was looking a little warn(although it had been repaired and reinforced) so I borrowed the hipbelt and shoulder harness from Calvin L as his was virtually brand new.

Oh well, at least his will be reinforced before our Sept hunt:rolleyes:.
