Well Sheep season has been open for a week and no stories or photos yet???? What's going on, must have been a few early rams taken by now? Last year Whitetailsheds blessed us with a post on August 5th! C'mon I need to live vicariously .

Twisting an ankle in my LAST ball game of the year, 5 days before I was to leave for a sheep trip, and a partner who had not quite recovered from some surgery, amounted to a "No Go" for the opener. Frustrating but whatd'ya do?
Seemed pretty warm out there, may not have needed a sleeping bag. Thought a guy could get away with just a fleece bag liner this year if you were out early.
Have to wait till later, which means thicker/ fuller capes.
Here's to safe hiking, and straight shooting to everyone hitting the hills!

How about spraining a knee while you are actually out there on opening day?....Good times.

And it was warm the night before the opener, warm enough to be on top of the bag, but by day 2 a bag was definately needed...Probably dropped to 7 degrees or so by monday night.

Heard it was really smoky around the Liard making spotting very diffiucult. Know of 2 groups to come down empty handed as they couldnt see.

That's how I would call it. Some good growth on that ram, had potential to be monster...imagine three more years growth on those horns! Fine ram none the less.

He's 8 boys !....one ring tucked in the fur. you guys who called him seven called it right ( as a potential kill) as well...why?....because if you shot this ram ' hoping' to find a ring in the hair it would be a foolish move. He's obviously legal in length. I did get to watch him for over two hrs in shooting distance and knew he was 8 before the hammer dropped..he did reveal it from a couple weird angles , but not soo easy to see from the side view....I would have liked to shoot a better one , but lots of hunters on my heals , my hunter was 60 with a bad knee and was on his 3rd stone hunt ( with out ever seeing a legal ram)...he was willing to shoot ANY ram but thankfully he played along and harvested this pretty sheep.

Pro 66, He's a good one. I thought he looked around 8. He sure has a tight curl and wide flair!.I wil guess his bases are around 14 1/2"-15'. Keep em coming!!!.

This doesnt make sense??? The number 7 ring which slee pointed out is only about 1 inch from the hair, (which would be this summers growth)
Another ring wont form until the harsh times of winter.
If your saying there is another burried right at the hair line, your suggesting that the ram didnt gain any growth since the dead of winter???

Nice ram anyways!

Look at the fur line above his eye...you can see the 8th ring...there's an inch of fur climbing up that horn....its an 8 yr old ram....the two pics might not show the details clear enough for guys on here.....fortunately the horns were in my hands as well as 6 others...its an 8 yr old ram.......with 8 clear rings around em...

Here's another one with similar growth rings....this ram has less fur up the horn and is wayy under the bridge. I looked at this guy at 100 yrds through a spotting scope for a WHILE before letting the guy claim it as his grandslam ram after 3 hunts for a stone as well.....its 8 and on his wall.

Keep the sheep photos comming! Check out the annulus rings on this set,he died in his 11th winter and still wasn't full curl, found this set up a wash off of MacDonald Cr. in 1999.

The sheep im my avatar had very similar growth ring development. Both the guide (the late Doug London) and the inspector said it was 8 years old. Again, a ring close to the base of the horns. However, since the horns extended above the bridge of the nose, it was legal anyway. that's why I guessed 8 years old.

the guide (the late Doug London)
Doug passed away..
That's sad news, I worked as a wrangler for Doug on a few sheep hunts one year, he was a great guy and an awesome sheep hunter.
He was good enough to shared allot of information about sheep hunting with me...very grateful for that.
those hunts where what got me hooked on sheep hunting, none recovering addict ever since.

Seems to be too big of a difference in growth from his 6th to 7th year? False annuli maybe?? great ram either way!!!!!
