Does anyone know how the snows are doing this year?
I heard somewhere that there wasn't as big of a die off this year.

Go to the light goose, wrangel island population.

Seems like a good year atleast for nesting, no wipeout like last year amoung other factors. They're saying up from 957400 from last year to 135000/140000 this year.

the russian biologist vasilli barsonic had said 3 weeks ago that as long as they had nice weather for the next 2 weeks we would see a season like we had 2 yrs, ago or better, having after watching the weather for alaska for those 2 wks. there was only 2 days of rain and a bit colder temps. unlike last yr. the rest of the weather was good.hopefully this weather was close enough to russian weather.....fowl

The article says further that:
"Nesting conditions at Wrangell Is. ....were reported as excellent and one of the earliest nesting seasons on record. Preliminary estimates included a spring population of 135-140,000 , with 50-60,000 nesting pairs..... Biologists expected excellent production from Wrangell with estimated nesting success estimated at 80% and mean clutch size of 4.1 eggs. A larger than average fall flight is expected in 2009."
