I agree that the BC Backroads Mapbooks are a great start but the IMapBC has roads listed that don't even show in the books.

Get your hands on logging plan development maps if you can. These will have the most accurate information and often indicate the status of roads, have km markings, stream crossing, cutblock overlays to orientate yourself etc. My experiences with the BC backroads mapbooks have shown they are not very accurate. They have the main roads but the spurs are often mismapped, not mapped at all and they don't indicate conditions of the roads very well.

Logging plan maps are available form your local forest licencee or maybe from the Regional MoF office. Forest Mapview (online) is also a good source and is the most up to date. It is similar to IMAP but shows a bit more information on road status (ie. permitted, fsr etc). This is good information because if the road is non-status it is likely in poor condition, maybe deactivated and you probably won't be able to drive it. The road might even be entirely overgrown. Deactivated or non-status roads will be removed from the development maps, or maybe drawn with a faint dashed line or sorts which will correspond to a status listed in the map legend. It's not perfect either but is better than other maps.

Be back roads books don't show these road conditions and if the road is even mapped it will show up as a line on the map. If have had some negative experiences and a lot of lost time looking for roads shown in the BC Backroads mapbook that don't exist...

Clover Point Cartographics (http://www.cloverpoint.com/) used to print out maps from the Provincial map database with whatever you want (for a fee). I don't see it in their list of services any more so maybe they've moved on.
