Just wondering what sex the mountain goat on the front cover of the hunting synopsis is. Is it a Nanny?

Thanks Gord

By the way the horns look, I'd think that's a Billy.

My guess is Billy. Bases of horns are nice and fat and pretty close together.

That's funny, I was looking at it today and asked myself the same question. I'd say it's a billy.

If anybody wants to start a poll on this, I'd appreciate it as I don't know how. The horns are very wide at the bottom but wouldn't you say there is quite a gap between them? Also hard for me to tell if the horns curve sharply or not.

Ha, I was thinking the same thing when I picked up the regs the other day. The powers that be posted the question but failed to provide the answer (I couldn't find it anyway).

I say billy.

Thanks for the responses. I'm not planning to hunt goats, just thought it was an interesting question because of the photo on the synopsis and I looked at the sketch on page 26. I realize you would have to do quite a bit more research before you hunt them, but I'm sure some people would not.

Does anybody have any interesting stories of identifying goats where they were not sure?

I e-mailed the Ministry today:

"Thank you for your email of July 24, 2009 regarding the Mountain Goat on the cover of the new 2009 Hunting and Trapping synopsis.
You may be disappointed to know that it is actually a Nanny on the cover."

Hmmm..... I better be able to identify sex as I predict I will see my goat in 58 days from now. I'd be very dissapointed to make a mistake in the field.

Well I think the Ministry should refer to page 26 for details. because that is a billy. Heavy bases, carries the wieght to the tips. 4 1/2 years old also.

If you thought it was anything else, its time to brush up on animal ID:smile:

It's legal to kill either sex of mountain goat, but the fact is goats are so sensitive to harvest of females that it's why we're losing so much goat opportunity.

The goat on the cover is a nanny. Spacing between the horns is a red herring, as is horn base size. Look at the curve - straight at first with the main curve in the top 1/3. Also, the lack of pendulous testicles should be a clue....

Well, considering this pic was shot in mid to late winter. I would NOT be looking at the distance between the horns or for testicles because with the amount of hair these goats have it would be hard to see either. When your this close to a goat I would look more at the weight of the horn and how it carries. I have NEVER seen a Nanny with weight that carries to the tips like the one on the cover. And I have seen many Billies harvested that curve similar to a Nanny. So if you look close it is not a sharp hook but more a gradual curve starting close to half way up the horn. There is a reason for most people calling this a billy at the start of the thread. Because it is!!

i looked at this today and thought it was a nanny-just cuz of the horns dont curve until the last bit as showed on page 26 as a nanny..
-at 200+yrds it would be near impossible to tell unless you spend buckets o money on some optics!

Take another look and tell me that those horns taper any little bit. because i cant see it. look at page 26 and look at the head on drawing of the nanny, Look how skinny the horns are from the base and how they taper at the top. The goat on the regs does neither.

I guessed nanny mainly because the tips do make a bit of a tip backwards and because this particular photo is real iffy either way. Big Nanny, and probably dead by most replies. I think the ministry is trying to make a point.

Don't think a lone Nanny in the Fall is necessarily dry. Those little kids don't always live that long.
