Does anyone provide guided hunts for harlequin in BC? I've been wanting to shoot one for the wall for years but you can't shoot them on the East Coast.

I call them "Shit ducks" or "poop ducks"

There is only a select few that guide for waterfowl in BC, Crazy Farmer would probably be the best guy to answer the "who Guides in BC" question.

They aint shit but I know lots of guys who use those nicknames, probably two best waterfowl birds I've ate have been pan fried Brant and goldeneye, It all depends on their eating habitat. Lots of nicknames for them though.

The short of the short is nobody really, BC isnt known for its waterfowl hunting even though theres absolutely great waterfowl hunting out there(Keep it a secret before more friends from the south invade ). Theres a very good goose hunting outfit up in Vanderhoof, Wing and Trout, first stop out of alaska for the birds, he's a lurking member on here aswell. Then Kent outdoors used to guide agassiz way not sure if they still are or maybe only a couple times a season but I thought it was on Indian Reserve land too cant remember. The whole problem lies in the guide/outfitter rules, sure they may make sense for big game but to have the same set of rules for waterfowl is dumb, I mean say there 2-4max guides out there for waterfowl, you'd have to be a junior guide for them for 2 years before applying for your own license. Well what if they arent hiring or located in some other part of the province, your shit outta luck then. I thought theres been a few other guys "offer" their services for hunts but I dont know if they're licensed guides or not.

I'm almost positive theres no seaduck guides in BC, I very may well be wrong but I've never heard of one, tons of washington guides though but they're only allowed 1 harley a year for their quota with their sea duck cards. Where as we're 2/4 baglimit possession. Best luck I'd think is if you own a proper boat plan a trip to Vancouver island and do some scouting on the more southern parts on the island. I'm sure you'll find some and it'll just be that much more of a trophy on the wall once you've went through all that scouting to find them.

I agree though, I'd sure like to get some clown ducks for the wall.

I own a proper boat but I live in PEI. I've thought about going to Washington but as you say their season limit on harlis is 1 and if I am going to go all the way across our great country I'd like to shoot more than 1 if the oppportunity presents it's self. I've also thought about going to Alaska but can't get anyone to go with me. Plus I'd prefer to spend my money in Canada. Thanks for your responses.

Hello Woody4
I would be willing to show you where the Harlie's hang out if you come
out in late Fall. They feed with the Greater Bluebills, Scoters ,Goldeneyes
and Oldsquaws on mussel beds close to where I live.
Oh hell I'll even take you out as we are getting back into diver hunting
like we used to when we were kids. Got a bunch of old Scaup decoys
out of the attic a couple of weeks ago and started repainting them, lots
of fun recalling old times. It will be a good change from just pounding
Geese and Puddlers. Let me know if you are interested??
I live in Cowichan, Vancouver Island. GODS winter home.:biggrin::biggrin:
Cheers, Field Marshal.

Now theres an offer. Sounds like a prefect deal, you just gotta fly over now, And I guess it'd be cheaper then flying to Alaska anyways. Plus its something different then murrs and turrs.

I think the only place you can hunt turrs is Nfld and Labrador. Find they taste a lot like seal to me.

I call them that because every time I go out with Tod that is what he calls them... never ate or shot one myself... it is a stolen nickname! I personally like Teal the best but... to each is thier own

That's right. And if I'm not mistaken you have to be born in Nfld to hunt them.

Hello Crazy Farmer,
There used to be an outfit called Morning Flight Waterfowlers
on the lower mainland. They advertised in B.C. hunting synopsis a
few years ago. i tried to book a Wavy hunt with him one year.
After talking to him on the phone he told me I was severley under
gunned with my old Model 12 cornsheller . Said if I couldn't use at
least 3inch shells I had best stay home!!!!:icon_frow:icon_frow. Thought about sending
him some pictures but what the Hell???:roll:. Do you know if they are
still operating?
Cheers, Field Marshal.

Havent heard of them, not sure if they are still running or not. I'd think if they were hunting snows they'd be right in the delta/westham/ladner area, so I'd think a few on this forum are local guys who would know about the outfit. I guess it was all long range shots so thats why he wanted a 3" minimum but I guess thats his opinon. I guess thats all there is sometimes with snows when its a bad batch of juvies for the year.

I thought there was somebody out that way that did the odd snow hunt every once in awhile. With a few hundred windsocks.

If it's the same guy that built blinds (sort of blinds anyway) all over the marsh and had a big 18' or so boat camo painted he was a joke. Charged big bucks and no clue on how to hunt the marsh. He only lasted a year or so I think.

How long ago was this guy guiding? I went out there in 94 or 95 and hunted with a "guide" that was a real cowboy. Wasn't too impressed with him or his antics!

Ya I remember that guy also, he had a huge hide rack on his boat. If I remember correctly he was there in around 94' or 95'. Wasn't much competition that's for sure with that big tub of his. I know he wasn't very happy when he found me in one of his blinds on the inside marsh. K

94-95 sounds about right.

I'd imagine it would be tough trying to guide an area for a species that anyone can hunt on with a companion. I'm not even sure if you require anyone to escort for small game?

Unfortunately I have found it necessary to withdraw my offer of
a Harlequin Duck hunt to Woody4. It seems I should have consulted
with certain other members of my hunting buddies. I've been informed,
any future invitations to shared gunning grounds will require unanimous
approval of all concerned. Although these grounds are my immediate
family's prized locations, I am bound to bow to old friends wishes.
I have apologized to Woody4 by telehone for any inconvenience I may
have caused him. I wish him luck on his quest for Harlequins!
This being a public forum, that was used to try and set up the hunt,
I think it my responsibility to apologize to Woody4 on this site.
To any one else on here I may have offended I am truly sorry.
Good luck to all in the new season!!
Cheers Field Marshal.
