do you think a 243 with 55gr ammo would be still to much for coyotes?

no

there isnt too much as 'too much'

unless you're going after hides, then a 243 w/ 55 gr. is still good, but better would be a smaller caliber such as a 17 Rem, 221 FB, 222, 223, 22-250, & 220 Swift (with the right load)

A 243 will work well with heavier bullets too. They don't expand on the light hide of a coyote.

Back east I knew a guy who handloaded small bullets in his 243 and they were pushing 4000 fps according to him. He used to hunt Fox and Coyotes for the furs. I don't know weather or not his calculations for speed were right but those bullets actually shreiked when fired. Fred

3900-4000 fps is certainly doable with a 243 or 6mm Rem w/ 55 gr.

Have a buddy who hunts coyotes for the fur with a 243 and 55gr bullets, rarely gets an exit wound. He swears by it so much I went and got me one too.

There is a huge selection of bullet weights and styles for the 243. Great coyote calibe.

The 55 would not be too much for yotes at all. I'd prefere 75 gr. V-Max actually. I'll actually be loading heavier even because there are some big wolves and Mt.Lion in my area.

I've shot yotes plenty of times with the 7mm Rem Mag while big game hunting. A big game bullet will do less damage than a little varmint bullet unless you buy something designed not to exit.

FMJ the same as steel jacketed?

FMJ the same as steel jacketed?

Nope...

FMJ is 'ball' or military ammo. There is a copper or steel jacket competely encasing the front of the bullet. Reduces or eliminates expansion.

There are many bullets that are soft point, designed for expansion, but wiht a soft steel jacket instead of a copper jacket.

You don't see them much anymore, but they used to be not uncommon.
