I take 50 feet of 3/16" braided synthetic rope should I need a little assistance. IMHO if full climbing gear (harness, rope, etc) is needed then the goat should have lived to see another day! I am packing enough gear without all that extra.

50 feet of 3/16 parachute cord. No way I would ever be carrying 100 ft of 3/8" That pack is too heavy already.

My mistake. I just checked . . . the rope I take is 3/16" white nylon rope from Canadian Tire. It's lightweight and tough enough for what I need it for. I take 50' on a goat hunt but am taking more than 100' for part of my upcoming sheep hunt (for different reasons).

Yep... lol, my dads motto was "if the grass can grow, a man can go!"

I've seen some grass growing in places I won't be climbing around! If you've ever seen the "Planet Earth" DVD's from the BBC they have one on "Mountains" and they have an awesome camera shot of a goat on a high peak... You see a closeup of the goat and then as the camera pans away you get the full scope of "where" that goat really is! Amazing little buggers.

I only bring enough rope to tie the goat to my pack. If he's in a bad spot you don't shoot. You just have to wait them out.

Those videos were both taken on Sunday. The first one, they scale that entire cliff, it is more than a 65 degree slope in many places. The second video they cross a cliff that is about a 55 degree slope. On the second one you may be able to go around the cliff at least, but there is no way you could chase the first group, probably not even with rope and a harness.

Here is a picture of the whole cliff they scaled from top to bottom.

If I remember correctly, in his book "A Beast the Color of Winter" Doug Chadwick states falls are the leading natural cause of goat mortallity with getting caught in avalanches as second.

Hey,

If guys want to incorporate rock climbing and hunting then go for it. Just don't head out with rope and too much ambition without the proper knowledge and preperation. Remember... going up is the easy part...don't get in over your head, it can turn an enjoyable hunt into a nightmare with one wrong step.
