Does anyone know what kind of spider this is? If i had to guess i would say its some type of trap door spider. http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/June24_09_079.jpg

Where on earth did you spot that? It certainly doesn't look like anything that is native to B.C. or I'll be a monkey's uncle. Definitely, as you say, Tarantula looking for sure. I really don't know why people are being allowed to import such exotic species, it just introduces future and unpredictable problems in the future imo.

possibly a brown recluse spider. they spin thier webs into a "trap door" type web. they are found on the island, but not super common. you dont want to be bit by one of these.

I don't know the name but I find those spiders all the time in my dad's yard while digging worms. They live under ground, in a funnel of dirt and webbing. In the summer time, when its warm, those things are aggressive. They lift their front legs exposing their fangs which I've seen get to three sixteenths of an inch long. The big ones are a dark purple with a shiny black tinge to the thorax. Just walking by them makes them get aggressive. They look like a funnel web spider to me as they are the same color and have similiar fangs that sit verticle on their heads not horizontal like most common spiders. I've looked all over for the name of this spider but I can't find it anywhere, only pics. I googled ,"Spiders of Vancouver Island" and some pics come up but no name. If you have better luck finding the name, keep us posted. It would be interesting to see if they are native or introduced.

i am 100% sure thats it is not a HOBO spider, i do not think i have seen one of those in BC, at least not by that picture, if it were a little clearer i may be able to identify it, it does resemble several species however.
brown recluse spider, yellow sac spider (although it is a bit darker in color). need a little more info on it, where was it, how big is it.
I love insects and arachnids especially, i will never understand why people kill them when they see them, they are so good for the environment, without them we would be overrun by all the other insects.I even have my wife removing them from the house and letting them go outside. SPIDERS ARE BEAUTIFUL This bears a very close resemblance to Dysdera crocata, a spider that specializes in preying on isopods (small crustaceans known as woodlice or roly polys) that sometimes can be pests in houses, particularly where damp conditions are common. The spiders’ long fangs enable them to penetrate the tough exoskeleton of the isopods

If you like them so much I'll send you all the black widows that I find in my garage:smile:.

Don't think it's a hobo as well. All the images of hobos show a lot more hair..this one almost looks bald!

There are NO Brown Recluse in BC. They are limited to the south Central US with a small pocket in California. We do have lots of Black Widows as well as Hobo Spiders which are an alien introduced species that first came to the west coast via the port of Seattle in the early 1930's and have moved to Oregon, BC and Alaska.

Negative on the woodlouse spider. Check the fangs. The Woodlouse spiders close together from the side. The ones on mine point down only. Meaning it can only penitrate its prey in a vertical motion. Different spider. I had a tarantula expert tell me that it is a Mygalomorphae and they are the only ones ive seen that even resemble what i found.

Guess im still looking for a conclusive.

Looks like a subspecies of Dwarf Tarantula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mecicobothriidae) aka the sheet funnel web.

A rarity this far north, but not unheard of.

I was digging the ground out for a slate stair case in a friends garden earlier this year and found one of those spiders approx. 12-18"under the ground in a little hollow about 1.5" in diameter.
It had a small tunnel leading to the surface, it seemed rather non-aggressive as I handled it, removed it from the path of the stair case and placed it on a pile of old wood for it to make a new home.
I'm not 100% positive but, I chalked it up to being a burrowing wolf spider, as per a book kicking around the house here.
Pretty neat looking critter I think.

A co-worker was supposedly bit on his bicep by a brown recluse just this past weekend while down in Kaleden. He was out for a run and stopped to help a couple of guys inload a boat. He didn't feel anything at the time. Looked like a large amount of bruising and swelling....similar to this

Not sure how the doc identified the bite?

I was helping a friend do some work in his crawl space under his house about 5 years ago. His house is an old house out in Point Grey its about 80-100 years old and there is just dirt in this crawl space. Well i had no idea until the next day when I woke up that I got a spider bite on my leg. Within 24 hours it was all purple and the size of a grapefruit:eek::eek:!! I was sick, dizzy, couldnt feel my leg I wasnt sure what had happened so I was meeting a friend at a local Coffee shop and I woke up in the hospital with the friend i was meeting there being told i passed out and It was caused by a spider bite. I was told it was a black widow but i dont know if that is correct?? But man it was nasty and I needed antibiotics for about a week and a ton of sleep.

any thoughts on the spider??

I was bitten on the eye lid sleeping in a lean to out in the Nahatalach. Woke up in the morning and couldn't see anything. Both eyes completely swollen shut and flush with my fore head. I looked like Quasi Moto for crissakes. Didn't hurt too much but stayed that way for about two days before it even started coming down. The left eye opened a bit that night but other than that I had to sit around the campfire and drink beer by feel. The other guys thought it was horrendously funny, me .... not so much. I hate friggin spiders... kill em all.

i'm new here (this thread is what got me to join as i found a hobo spider in my house in kelowna and was researching that) and i don't want to step on any toes, but i don't think it's a pacificus. i'm pretty sure what you found is a member of the Callobius family, possibly a Callobius Severus. it looks pretty fresh from a molt, too.
