Just wondering if anybody has hunted using a mountain bike. With the aid of a deer call I have come very close to does and bucks. Also have had does chase me. Just wondering if other people have rode a bicycle while hunting.

I remember a story in Outdoor Life years ago of an old bearded hippy guy that used his bicycle to hunt with and man did he ever get some monster muleys. It's been so long that i don't remember anything about what was said in the article but i do remember his bike was one of the dinosaur ones with the little basket on the front of his handle bars and the little ding ding thumb bell.

I understand that extreme mountains, snow, etc can limit the bicycles use.I have a two wheeled trailer that I carry about forty pounds in for training.Early season bow I will use but am concerned about sweat odours.

I use the mountain bike every year for hunting ,hunters laughed at me years back when I was riding on top of my buck peddling the bike back to the closed logging road gate ,wish I had taken pic of this back then LOL.

I use one for elk hunting every years as well ,last year I had to send my bike back with my hunting partner because we had no room to take it back to the island ,man it would have came in handy to get the elk meat out last year in the road closure.

Maybe this year if I get an elk down I will take some pic of portions of the elk on the back of the mountain bike.http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon6.gif

Have used a bike to hunt on forest roads and found deer tended to stand and look when they see you, rather than run when you are seen on foot.
I say try it.

not personally but i know of 2 other guys who do so. they get a great workout and can cover a lot of ground in a very stealthy manner. they have a good collection of racks in the shed for proof.

Never used a mountain bike but I know of a friend who uses a bike quite regularly and tells me that he can ride right up to his treestand without spooking any deer. I believe him because he has a wall full of mounted bucks to prove it.

I will have to try it, as I should be getting a new bike soon! Maybe those whitetails won't spook as easily as they did last year.

Used a mtn. bike a few times for scouting. Rode and pushed it for 2.5 hours up the mountain. Rode all the way down in 15 mins.

years ago when i was living in gibsons ,a buddy and myself would use our bikes to go over and hunt on keats island.everytime we went over thier we came back with a deer be it with shotguns or bows we were always able to get in close.the tough part was riding back with a deer hanging from a 5 inch round tree spanning from the handle bars from the back bike and the seat post on the front bike.it was a slow careful ride back to the boat but it worked awsome for us at the time.they make some pretty good kids type trailers now for towing behind mountian bikes and with a few modifications would make a great pack trailer.

I think they're rated for 60 pounds of kiddie meat, so we figured a good hundred or so of deboned meat, since the safety rating would be way over the top, hauling children and all. All our gear was about 50 pounds each, so we figured on several trips out. The way out was almost all downhill (push bike one the way in, as someone mentioned) so cruising the meat downhill would be no problem, just a matter of trips.
Unfortunately we didn't get to test the Carcass Tonnage Rating  so I'll have to wait and see this season. Great for hauling gear though, and you get into some really beautiful spots with no hunter vehicle traffic.
Where we were, though, people were allowed to come in to sightsee with a vehicle, which really pissed us off.
We talked to the CO, and he said there was talk of Vehicle Closures for ALL users coming, as it should be. At least in hunting season, if not all year.
Great way to hunt, and stay in shape.

Point 5 on page 18 of the regulations states that a firearm must be unloaded on a bicycle.

I know I missed a chance at at least one buck when I surprised one in the middle of the road while coming around a corner and had to fumble in my pocket for a cartridge while straddling the bike and all the motion scared it away.

I carry my rifle on a sling and if it had been loaded, it would have been a simple point and shoot.

It's a good rule. If we were allowed to carry a loaded rifle, there would always be the possibility of losing control, dumping the bike and the gun going off killing you.

Russle just go to my doctor and get a note saying you have a bummed leg, you can then take a quad into those restricted areas legally.:D

I drew a goat tag a few years back in 4:22 north of Quinn Creek. Didn't realize it was a vehicle closed area so drove back to Cranbrook and rented mountain bikes and pedaled and pushed the 16 K's or so back into the goat area.

Climbed in and shot a goat that was unfortunately totally demolished on his descent from his perch. Too bad... sitting there on top of the world
notching my goat tag.

On the ride back out however I came around the corner in time to see a young white tail buck sniffing a doe. We quickly quartered that deer out and carried him in our packs. Nice ride all the way downhill back to the truck.

Had a pretty sore coxis from the heavy pack jamming me onto the seat all the way down but it sure beat walking. Especially when we whizzed past the grizzly bears along the road with our bloody packs!

I've also used a bicycle on the vehicle closed Weyerhauser lands down around Mt. Ranier when I used to elk hunt down there.

I see bike tracks in and around the Empire Valley area too.

What type of trailers are you guys using?

Jager
07-14-2009, 08:20 PM
I wonder what the resistance would be if you fashioned up a "travois" sp? like the plains indians did instead of towing in a trailer that you may or may not use. Cut 2 long poles that cross and are tied off behind your seat and then strap your game to them so it's suspended above the ground. Oh the gears are turning!

Very good point, don,t forget as the brakes get hot the less they will want to stop you.
I have a friend that rigged up his trailer with brakes. He used wheels off of a bmx. you know the stile that when you pedal backwards it locks up the wheel. He just plumbed a cable to the lever on the spindal of the rim. He says it works great.

Add racing pegs for your handle bars which would allow you to hook on the ATV gun racks......saddle bags for food and survival gear ........Camo was suggested by Bill Jordan of Realtree from a company called CamoClad......add the DOUBLE JOGGER STROLLER AND YOU'RE SET WHEN TODDBARTELL WANTS TO JOIN YOU ON THE HUNT......(diapers and bottle included)

I used to when I was a lot younger and before I bought my first quad it was also still legal to have a loaded rifle on a bike then.

I would ride game trails and was always amazed at how quiet I traveled and how close to game I could get without them spooking.

Never thought of using a kid trailer awesome idea.

Here is a photo of my custom made bike trailer. Haven't taken it hunting, but planning one soon. Considering Keats island with the bow, seems others have had good success there. One buck is in my freezer from Lillooet, Gotta hunt Region 1 & 2 to get the other.

I believe British Columbia has banned the hunting of e bikes as of this current 2021 hunting season. This was told to me by an experienced hunter I crossed paths with. Have not fact checked, but worth noting and maybe someone else can shed more light on this.

No E-Bikes for hunting.
At least not in "Motorized" Vehicle Restricted Areas.
Otherwise good to go elsewhere unless Parks Canada (should you be using some of their trails) also has "limitations" on which
E-Bikes can be used if at all.
Think there is 3 separate categories when it comes to Parks Trails and E-Bikes depending on their power output etc.
Finally the ministry made a ruling and put it into the Hunting Regs.
Up till then, it was a matter of which CO you crossed.
Some would give you a ticket and the next would allow it.

And yes, I ride with a mtn bike, and yes, I get odd looks, but honestly i have had guys pass me in their trucks looking for elk,
and seconds after going by I end up bugling an elk they just passed in the timber.
It can be a great way to hunt and especially in motorized restricted areas if you don't own horses.

Not overall, they've just specifically included electric motorcycles as a motorized vehicles. Since they're sold at bike stores, some people thought it was a grey area.
