This is a Manning Park resident buck. Photographed last fall by the main lodge. What I wouldn't give to find this guy's sheds or to meet him in another place and another time.

huntinnewbie;
Thank you for putting up the photo.

I've seen a few non-typical mule deer over the years and have shot some strange young ones, but never anything like the old boy in the photo.

Interestingly he has a bit shorter face than the local mule deer. Can anyone tell me at what point one might begin to bump into blacktails when heading over towards Hope? Could the shorter face be a blacktail influence?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Dwayne

Yes, I noticed that also. Not that broad in the forehead and short in the face. He actually wasn't that tall of a buck for the rack he was sporting. You might be right and there is a coastal influence in this guy.

Huh?

That's what I called him, a-typical,atypical or non-typical, depending on how you spell it.

Sorry, not familiar with the term "A-typical", I thought you were calling it a typical rack!

For those that are saying this might be a blacktail hybrid???? I have to ask... what part of this deer seems less than 100% mulie????
Looks about as mulie as can be in my eyes, and Ive seen a few!
The double throat patch is not all that rare, this one came from the interior!

Its antlers don't look like mulie, tine shape, length, weight and configuration looks blacktail. Face is short, more blacktail in structure but coloring looks mulie. Being that its in Manning park, it's basically right on the boarder between mule deer and blacktail.

Just my hunch, could be right, could be wrong

That's a great character buck. Wouldn't score worth $hit, but sometimes it ain't about the score. The muleys definately interact with the blacktails in the highcountry in there, but I've been told the rutting zones are on opposite sides of the mountains. Good chance that the odd deer goes the wrong way, but looking at that one pic provided, he looks like a pure bred muley to me.

a few years ago there was an early snowfall. I was on the ski lift at manning and there were deer tracks and rubs on the hill along the timber. I've always wondered if these deer winter around there.

Nice young buck with funny antlers, lol I bet he gets laughed at and teased by other deer. No girl friends either. lol. Weird looking. Very tiny body no size for pushing his weight around, skinny.
Unbalanced no symetrical lines, and well ugly too, man he better stay in the inner park for hunting season, someone will take him home.

The do not like the look of non-typical deer. I think they are really ugly and I would never pass on a big animal but I would never aim to shoot a non-typical as a wal hanger

That is just me tho.

Gime me the chance to shoot one of Mr.Deans wall hangers ;) and I will be more then happy to do the deed!

There sure are some nice deer up in manning park. I saw a huge 8x7 mulie there while camping a few years ago...at least I think it was a mulie. I'll see if I can dig up the picture and put it on here.

go to the books and look at the boundaries that is a mule deer no matter what people wanna call it. a cross is a mule deer in the books and a black tail is a black tail. ruby creek and Jones lake are and west Harrison are a long way off manning park. Ive hunted not for off of the east gate for years never seen a buck that i would consider a black tail or a cross and ive shot a few good ones outta the area.

just my 2 cents.

nice mulie pick though.

I gotta say I like the non-typical racks more than the symmetrical ones, it gives them quite a bit of character. Either way he looks like a pretty good meat buck too
