ive been looking for a cabinet or safe for the longest time, and didnt find anything that was worth my time, or it was 1000$.
I decided to retrofit an old POL/ Flammable liquid storage cabinet that i got as a freebie. Its not the heaviest gauge, but it is double walled.

it had a few dents and scratches, but the price was right...

brought it home and degreased it, added a bit of bondo to smooth out the dings, and gave it a light sand in preperation for paint.

I used rustolium hammered finish black paint for the exterior and used a flat white for the interior to lighten it up.

I found a very HD hasp and hidden shackle/puck lock. good luck getting through that!

all in it cost me about 250 bucks for paint, locks, and materials. now i wont have to CRAM in my rifles into a "12 gun" AKA 6 gun cabinet

Bolt it to the floor and walls! I watched a demo video where guys tipped over a heavy safe and used large crow bars to pry it open... took them about twenty minutes on a rather large vault with five 3/4 inch locking dead bolts.

I know that nothing is (completely) theft proof, i plan on lagging it to the wall so it cant be tipped, but even so, the room its in is sooo small that the only option would be to tip it onto the doors. It took 2 of us to carry/drag it into place when it was empty so although its not a bunker its reasonably secure.

In anycase, they are far more secure from theft or curious hands than they were beside my bedside table with trigger locks.

thanks all for the props!

I found it funny that as soon as it had a coat of that black hammerite paint, i though to myself, "wow, now that looks stronger!"

either way i sure like that finish

Nicely done. Like the choice of hammered steel paint for the exterior too. I have one off those and was kicking around the idea of doing the same for myself. Now that I see how good it comes out.... I'll be spending some time in the shop with mine too. Thanks for the post.:D

went over and visited the grandparents today, ate there food, used there workshop, and drank there coffee.

I made the barrel rest from some local vancouver cherry, rough milled by my grandfather 30 some years ago... FYI i used a 1 1/8" fostner bit and spaced them 2.5" apart, 7/8" back from the front.... 1/4" round routered and sanded to 300 with a coat of danish oil..... this makes them as tight as most rifles can go with out touching butstocks to bolt levers..

also added a door trim piece so the buts dont have to touch the metal bottom of the cabinet

$20 dollars via EMT for the first person who can PM me the make and model of all the rifles pictured...jk

Nice job beats the hell out of paying upwards of a grand for a metal box with a lock
