The false morels are out, however you are taking a chance with them as they have a rocket fuel component. The best way to eat a true morel is role em in flour fry em up in butter with a touch of garlic. God are they ever good.

Do you know if the false morels come out before the true variety or after?

They usually last till mid June in the higher altitudes here.. Look for last years forest fires as they need sterile soil to grow..
.. Best recipe is to dip them in an egg wash and coat with bread crumbs or better yet, well crushed regular potato chip crumbs, then fry in a bit of oil.. They match the best fried oysters you could ever find!!!

False Morels look a bit like the true morels, they are however quite different if you look and take the time to look. There are several types of false morels.
There is the Conifer false morel (Deadly), Snowbank False Morel (Choice with caution), Gabled False Morel(Poisonous) Thick Stalked False Morel(Should not be eaten as it is a close relative to the Conifer False Morel) Saddle shaped False Morel (Deadly)
Do a internet search and I am sure you will find the pictures and descriptions of each type. The above info was taken from The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms.

Does anyone know if morels can be found within a reasonable day trip of Vancouver? If so what type of habitat does one look in?

Venison, wish it was elk. Don't get out much for elk in my parts. Try to do my own butchering.
