After getting caught up on all "stuff" I had to do, it looked like I was able to take one day this weekend to go on a bear hunt. Nasty5000 (Greg) and I hand been trying to get a day set, and Sunday turned out to be the day. I had the whole day and I was going to use it!
We decided on an early start, We left Gregs house about 9ish;). We where both thinking most bear sightings where in the late afternoon, the plan was to get in to an area look for sign and wait to see what wondered out at dusk. We hit the Coquihalla planning on hunting back side of Missezula lake area via Brookmere.
The first 10 km off of 5A was full of ATVers but the higher in elevation we got their was no green at all no sign, nothing. We checked out different areas for the next couple of hours with still no fresh sign so we decided to head back down. On the way back to the hi way we discussed what the next plan was, and it was decided that we where heading for Peachland and a place Greg knows and took a monster out of last year.
We get in to his area and its nice and green a good sign. We found a high vantage point, had a bite to eat and glassed. Hour or so later(now about 7pm) Greg says "BEAR"!!! At this point it was still at least 750m away. The stalk is on. We where able to stay hidden on the road until we got within 300m or so we walk in another 100m and get set up, at that point a second bear walks out of the brush 20m away we had not see before. A sow with a cub? We looked for a few more minutes and came to the conclusion they where both mature bears the where the same size.We where going to try for both but decided against.
I got down and had a good rest on a stump, waited for the bear to come broadside and I shot. The bear rolled got up and bolted for the treeline. We walked to the spot and found a good blood trail, just inside the tree line their he was already expired. From the place of impact to where he died was less than 20m, broad side took out both lungs, 160gr TSX out of my Remington 700 7mmRM At just over 200m
Thanks Greg for all your help when you need help packing out your bear let me know!;) Steve
