Well it looks like this was my last turkey hunt for the year. Luckly I got my tom.
I was sitting at 4:15am today and it was just getting light out. I tried a area Dad & I hunt. We have never been able to put it toghter in this spot. We sit just below a small ridge and the turkeys ALWAYS come thru up on the ridge, so we never get a chance. So I out-smarted them and sat on the ridge. A tom was calling down the vally. So I let out a couple of hen calls and the tom closed in fast. I was all ready for him to poke his head out . Instead he walked BELOW the ridge where I usualy sit. So much for me Out-smarting the tom. I could not get him to come back so I jumped into my truck and got ahead of him & set up a hen decoy. A couple of calls and hes coming in fast. He just kept going up the vally. Out-smarted AGAIN. It started to rain so I went under a tree until it stopped. The turkeys stopped calling for a hour till it stopped rainning. I heard a gobble in the distance and called back. 20 mins. later another tom was in sight. I could only see legs, but he was gobbling. He went out of sight so I went ahead of him trying to get him in close. We played leep-frog for over 30 mins. until he crossed the vally and went over the hill. I returned to my decoy for a new set-up. I moved 100yards and did a hen call and got a responce from up where the tom went. I qickly set my hen decoy in some lite brush and then crawled behind a log. A few more calls and he was on the road behind me (just in front of my truck, I could see my truck from my spot). I called VERY lightly on my slate. Each time he would come a few feet closer until I saw him. Slowly I pointed my 12 gauge to where I thought he would come out. A final churp and he stuck his head out passed a pine tree, one shot at 48 paces and I have my second turkey ! Beard 8" , spurs 1/2" , about 15-16lbs. This late in the season I think its a great bird. This whole hunt from first call to last call took about 4 hours. Im glad I stuck with it. Now Dad has to get his.

Right on! Way to gitter done under pressure. Turkeys are a lot tougher hunt than I would have guessed. Calling them in still doesn't guarantee a bird. It's tough to close the deal. Nice work.

Thanks guys,
This year was tuff for turkeys. The weather was a big factor for me this year. Too much snow & cold. I did find that once the weather warmed up the turkeys started to call more. Hunter pressure at the start of the season was more than Ive ever seen, but after opening week it eased off greatly. MARK was right about the best time to get a bird (first week). But sometimes you just have to stick with it. Normaly I would have gone back to the truck as soon as it started to rain but a guy at work who hunted turkeys in Ontario said he liked hunting turkeys in the rain. So I stuck with it and it paid off.
