Is there such a thing, and if so where would I get one? or something similar? I've seen some contraptions through Cabelas that are like dog beds that strap on to the rack of the quad but I'm looking for something that would completely contain them. If I can't find something suitable we'll probably end up strapping a crate into a trailer but I thought it would be a little less bouncy to ride right on the ATV itself...

Ideas?

Don't know if this is quite what you were thinking about but depending on the size of your dog this might work.

Also try this one as it's a little cheaper and the sides open on it. You could probably rig something up to put somewhat of a roof on it for containment.

I have seen some home made ones similar to the ones GM posted, just remeber your exhaust fumes come out the back right at those cages or even into a trailer and a sleeping dog doesn't hunt well!!:icon_frow I would have one up at the rack hieght.:-D

LOL. I never thought about the exhaust fumes. Maybe Cabelas sell doggy gas masks:-D.

Yeah, especially one that never wakes up again. Shite, can you imagine how you would feel when you got to where you were going and opened that cage???:(

Here's a home made version from one of the fella's in our ATV club, works like a charm, comfortable bed in the bottom, plexiglass viewing window in the side and a hole in the top, that has a liner for comfort, for fresh air viewing. The dog loves it and gets excited to go along for rides!

That's great Tomahawk - that's similar to what we used last year except we didn't have a lid on it and I was worried the dog would fly out if we hit a bump the wrong way. Maybe a few modifications to my rubbermaid bin is all I really need to do :)

I got one made out of 5/8s plywood. Port holes out the front dog door behind my seat. Rides on my back rack and the back part of the seat. Makes for a nice back rest8-) Fits four dogs. Can't even fire up the quad for yard work without the dogs thinking they are going hunting:lol:

Houndogger- do you have a picture of this? I'm trying to figure out how big it must be to fit four!

Yup I will go take a pic of it in a bit. I think its 44" Wide 26" high 26" deep. Four dogs is a bit like sardines, three is real good. Less wheeling.LOL Depends how big of dogs you plan on putting in it to.

You got to make it fit your quad. I have a couple inches on each side.

BTS is getting one made out of aluminum. He is is getting his made a couple of inches less wide and high.

They are a blast to hunt off with the dogs:cool:

Wow! That's interesting. I've never heard of a crate on the back of a quad for hauling the dogs around. What ever happened to letting them get their exercise running beside the quad?

So.....what are these contraptions used for? (other than for cougar hunting)

Bear hunting Coon hunting. Still road the dogs also but it is tough to road them 100+ km a day:mrgreen: Plus you can get down all the trails and deactivated roads in search of game8)

Here's a carrier made from a barrel, with carpet inside for "paw traction"

Not too heavy, cheap, good for one or two small mutts.

I have a after market front and rear rack from Costco put on my Honda (about $80) and I can and do put two small plastic dog crates from Walmart on the rear rack attached with ratchet straps. works good for dogs up to 55 pounds ea....puphood1

Thanks for the photos. Lots of good ideas here.

Wiley- my intention is to have a safe way to haul my bird dog out on some rough trails to better hunting spots. We've got dozens of trails that start out a few miles from our place so it's easy to just load the dog up and go. Having the dog chase the quad is good exercise but I wouldn't expect her to have her A game on for hunting if she'd just been running several miles first - we do conditioning on non-hunting days.

Spokerider - you must be handy with a welder, the door on that barrel looks custom fitted!

Houndogger- do you notice a big difference in handling your quad with that box full of dogs on there?

Anyway, I think I'm inspired to build something to fit around the 2nd seat!

With four dogs yup:-P Real steep or nasty washouts you will have to let the dogs out. 2 or 3 dogs no problem. How big of quad you got? Mine is a 700. With the 300 or 400 hundreds I would just go no more then two or three. Stiffen your rear shocks up. If you put it further out the back so you can have two people on it you are going to be wheeling alot more:-P

Spoke that looks like a good set up you got their for your two dogs. Nice and light to I bet.

Puphood1 I used a dog crate before I made the plywood one and they work great. Nice and light just not very tough.

When I get some money scratched together I will make one out of aluminum;)
