I spent the day at the range with my 223 and .300wm on friday. Im recovering from a head and shoulder injury, so i though what could be a better way than to spend the day sitting down on a bench...

On the way home i had a funny feeling, so i decided to stop off at my backwoods site to see if there was any bear scat yet. On my way up the road, i came around the corner to see a 5'5" blackie walking away from me down the road.
Out i jumped, clip in, cycle the bolt, and i took aim. My hands were shaking like i had 12 cups of coffee, so i took a prone position. the bear was walking away from me and was not providing a decent shot. i though damn, he's going to walk over the hill and not give me a broadside shot. At that moment he turned 90 and started walking towards the edge of the bank/road. I took a deep breath, touched off a round. Bear flinched and jumped then jumped over the bank. CRASH CRASH CRASH CRASH...... seeing as my shoulder is still buggered (not my shooting shoulder) i phoned my hunting partner, and a few friends as i knew i needed some help with this one...
(BTW i was shooting the .300wm with my handloaded barnes tsx 150 grains, med powder load)
I found the bear 100ft down a 30 degree bank. so he was gutted, and then we used a 2:1 pulley system to hoist him up. when we got closer to the road, we used one vehicle as a redirect and the other to pull bear up the bank...
The shot was perfect, hitting a rib on the way in, hitting the bottom of one lung , the top half of the heart, out another rib and then through his arm bone. a clean through shot. (too bad i couldnt see the bullet after it did its work) In reflection and judging by the bowling ball look of the shrubs that he made on his way down. im pretty sure that he took 2-3 steps then tumbled down the bank.

he measured about 6feet from rear feet to nose and prob about 250-300 lbs

I dont have any picts, my partner has those ,but ill post up when i get them

Congrats on the bear!

Check out the most recent Outdoor Edge magazine for a bear sausage recipe. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like it oughta be half decent.

gotta love how those barnes bullets work so well

through a rib, lung, heart, rib, exited, entered his forearm, bone and then exited again.

approx mix was 60 lbs bear, 10pork, 10 beef, 8lbs cheese buncho japelenos mushroom onion, spices etc

just had my first one, could have used a bit more grease/fat and maybe ground it a little coarser, plus some more jalepenos... over all its pretty good!
