Okay, it's just a rubber chicken... but Beretta loves to fetch it.

Kimber prefers real birds - she's taking off after something feathered in the first picture. Her big trick these days is fetching the sad little bird corpses that the cats leave all over the yard (gross). She doesn't eat them although they do fit completely in her mouth while she's carrying them around. Can't wait to get her on some bigger birds this fall!

What are the other HBC puppies up to? Photo updates please :)

I watched a guy, about 70 year old, in Burnaby one day in a park. He had a German ShotHair with him and that dog was rock solid on points at crows, squirles and anything else that moved. That dog would hold poits for as long as the object was ther then go find another to point.

Man I was envious. The man had never hunted in his life and he had one of the better poiters I ever saw.

I bet it pointed Moles in the back yard too.

I would dearly have wanted that dog on Pheasant.

Spirit is up to 23 lbs. And is hitting the trails hard.

Here he is cheering on the Comox Valley Mudsharks at the Port Alberni Minor Girls Fastball Tourney this weekend. Watch the ball, don't retrieve the ball.

Hey SM,

You might want to try holding off giving him bumpers. Not trying to be a stickler, but too big/ heavy of objects can permanently damage their mouths as puppies, and make it difficult for them to hold things later in their life. I do not want to spread hysteria, but it is something to keep in mind.

Thanks Dirty. The bumper is a hollow plastic version and doesn't seem to be terribly heavy, it may be a bit lop sided though. And he's already poked a hole in it and is quite pliable. Which I have heard will make a dog chew but what's a guy to do. Other than let someone else train him, and where's the fun in that?

Is there a substitute for a bumper that is more appropriate? I was going to say dummy but that would just leave me open to all kinds of heckling.

Hi SM:- One thing that works very well for starting a small pup on the hold & fetch routine is a small paint brush roller......hardware stores carry them in all sizes, and you can get one about 7" long and 1 1/2" in diameter. You can build up each end by wrapping some pieces of rag around, and covering it with electrical tape. This makes it easy for the pup to hold, and prevents him from picking it by the end, and also makes it easy for him to pick up off the ground once you progress to that stage.
Hope this helps...
