Romping the bush today and came across this guy who won't see another summer. I sure hope he left his genes quite a few places. I'll be looking for his male heirs this fall. From the looks of the action around him I think a cougar nailed him. Must have been a good fight with the size of his rack.

I would appreciate if anyone could help me to approximately age and score this guy.

4-6 years old and in around that 170 mark.

Lots of character coming out in that guy. He might even range a little more NT if he lived.

I hope he died from the lack of rest, between boottie calls.

That guy almost made it through the winter season. There had been a huge fight. The fresh greenery and small trees around had all been uprooted, which tells me this wasn't done in the snow and the snow has just melted away up there within a week and a half. Also, he is still very, very stinky. I had to twist his neck and spine off. He was a big boy.

Thats a good score for sure, a tape will tell you the score, if you really want to know the age theres a lab in the US that does it for $20.
If you show me the exact location of the kill I might be able to help you some more

Nice find there ! Its not that hard to get a real close score using the B&C chart , get yourself a little 1/4 " metal tape and follow the directions ...
If I have to come over and do it for you , it will cost you !

Thats a real dandy find you have there hotload ,my guess on the age would be around 7 or 8 years old and the gross score would be around the hi 150 mark.

This deer looks like it has been dead for a long time could of been shot from a hunter late last year and the deer got away and died latter ???.

at first when I read the title of this I was thinking oh boy walk away from the computer Ali but then I took a deep breath and clicked

what an awesome find - can hang a few coats off that rack

I think I may start looking more for sheds and such, some people find the coolest things

the one sad thing is he wont be showing his stuff to the ladies this season but I am sure he had a good run

The amount of drying on the skull I would have to say that its been dead for more then a few weeks. As you say the snow just melted up there it could have died mid winter (or even shot with a bow in the late bow season and never recovered) and been frozen and buried by the snow untill just recently when the scavengers found it. But that theory does not explain the dryness on the skull.

Who knows, regardless awesome find. Like Mark said tell me where you found the skull I will do a better CSI examination of the carcass/area give you a better estimation of kill date:razz::razz:

Did you take any pics of the rest of him by chance ?
You'd be surprised what a layer of snow can preserve, both on an animal and the ground beneath it (torn up ground)
That stuff gets washed away from rain and repeated wet/dry cycles.

I went back out today to the same spot and really scouted it. Poplars and ponds really deep in the bush, hence the GPS. It was tough to get out of there, but, in saying that, this is why I found today what I found. A lot of different types of animals call this place home. Today was another really good day. When ya can't hunt yet you have to do something.
