I heard that story on the radio this morning, and didn't think too much of it, simply because we've always had Black bears in our yard and especially when the tree fruits ripen. Our dogs, all bird dogs, would chase them out of the area, and quite often they'd return later and the whole process would repeat.
Not once in many many years have I, or anyone else in the family, witnessed an aggressive bear or one that stood up to defy the dogs. We've never had to shoot a bear that came into the yard and the dogs always chased them off. Eventually we'd harvest the fruit and they'd quit coming around. Only to start again next season.
Were we lucky or what? My experience has biased my opinion no doubt. But this story has a different slant.
