Most important is the almighty compass. Then deer call, small fist aid kit, plastic pair of reading glasses so I can read the numbers on the tags and usually small topo map of area I hunt. Small pair of scissors to cut tag. On and on.

I use an external frame and hang my small day pack in it...deer quarters and ties nice on the frame , day pack goes back on top...no bloody internal pack to cclean....also bring rattling horns , canister call and lately I have been throwing in a spare trail cam...how many times you been hunting and saw a spot that begged for a cam?

StrikeForce fire starter. Similar to the traditional flint & steel but in a bright orange plastic case with firestrater cubes in the handle. I've tested it to -35 & it was the only firestarting tool that worked at that temp.! (Windproof lighter, bic lighter and matches all failed me). Also 1-2 home-made firestarters made of spruce pitch, parrafin and cedar shavings in lamp-oil soaked cardboard egg carton (gives a 5 minute ball of flame to build on).

Plus: knife, compass, headlamp, GPS, whistle, survival blanket, flagging tape, pull through bore cleaner (handy of you forget to tape the muzzle and plug your barrel scrawling through snow!), toque, jerky/ snack bars and water! All on me or in a pack that goes with me everywhere - even on the final stalk. That's the key - I know of a few guys who've run into trouble because they dropped their packs on the final sneak and then lost them when the adrenaline wore off!

For a typical day hunt I stay within a couple hours of home and know the area sufficiently well and so don't worry about getting lost.

1 - Be certain my vehicle is up to the task and will perform as expected.
2 - Be sure my clothing is adequate for the day - I can strip off, but I
can't add to what I do not have. Extras are in vehicle.
3 - Compose a meal, sufficient for the day that I can carry in my haversack.
Extra food and drink, as well as first-aid kit, is kept in the vehicle.
4 - The sack will contain, other than the food, binos, camera, 2 fixed blade
knives, chunk of nylon rope, some tough string, couple leak-proof
plastic bags, a clean old smallish towel and that's about it.

Now since I always still hunt from my vehicle in areas I am familiar with, I will only have my rifle and sack to contend with. So I'll be sure I have sufficient ammo in my pocket, small knife, game call perhaps and of course some toilet paper and BIC lighter.
Everything else that I haven't mentioned will be in the vehicle, if I need it, but since I seldom go far, and walk slowly with care as still hunting requires, I have yet in my many years of doing it this way experienced a cold night out or other serious problem. Taking a partner requires he is likewise equipped as well as a couple of charged up radios which are extremely convenient.

Rifle or bow w. ammunition or arrows, bottle of water, roll of flagging tape, small roll of TP, small Zip-Lock bag with wet wipes, snack, GPS, my small digi. camera, notebook and pen, cell phone (switched off when I am hunting),knife, bear spary, game calls (depending on species hunted and time of the season) and small Fist Aid Kit. On a day hunt everything has to fit into the cargo pockets of my pants and jacket and into a small pouch around my waste. If it doesn't I have way to much stuff. This is what I carry on me when I am hunting. I might take additional gear depending on how long I am away from home and where I stay ( field camp, cabin or hotel).

you never know when you might need something, i have gone on day trips and figured ah i won't need that! well guess what would have come in real handy. if you think there is a remote possibility of using it bring it.

I bring Rifle, Ammo and a SAR Tech :D

But on the off chance that he has to work(which is like twice in an entire hunting season)
It will vary depending on when, how long, time of season, and who I am going with.

But the basics,
Rifle
Ammo(preferably with my magazine)
Water
Snacks
Flagging tape
Tape
Zapstraps
and assorted Survivial gear

From there everything gets added or tailored to the aforementioned conditions

Usually about 20 pounds of stuff I never use-and most of it people have already posted on the thread. But the day I don't bring it is the day I'll need it-I guarantee.

a bullet, a bit of gunpowder and a couple of cans of beans. i eat the beans, and swallow the bullet and gun powder. when i see a deer, i lie on my back, pull my pants down, aim my ass at the critter, fart and drop him. works well out to about 150 yards. :D

seriously though. i take a day pack with a couple knives, sharpener, rope, flagging tape, compass, gps, ammo, spare clothes (left in the truck), some small snacks, sunglasses, gun, foil blanket, bic lighter, storm proof lighter and trip specific odds and ends.
