Just got back from a hunting trip near Fort St. John. My hunting partner graciously offered to show me around some private land that has had some nice bucks. We safaried around for a few days and saw lots of does, a bunch of illegal bucks (one monster 3 x3 that we couldn't make legal), a couple of glimpses at some large bucks, a snowy owl, a couple of moose cows (one cow had two calfs), and the occassional grouse.

We passed up a decent 4 x 3 and small 4 x4, hoping that the wall hanger was just around the corner. But after a few days without cutting a tag, we decided that we would take the next legal buck. We jumped this 4 x 2 in the long grass. He stood up not 30 yards from the truck, and slowly began to walk away. A quick shot to the neck and we had our first deer.

The compulsory inspection confirmed that he was an inmature buck. Good eating, I hear

We hunted a few more days until this guy showed up. We watched him for a few minutes and determined that he was a 4 x 4, with decent mass and length. We were able to get to a 240 yds from him. The shot was in the brisket. He hunched up on bullet impact as blood gushed out the wound. He didn't move and let us get to within 40 yards for the coup de grace to the neck. He turned out to be a 5 x 4. The inspector figures the buck was about 4 years old.

The trip was a terrific initiation to Region 7. With some luck, I'd like to try the early moose season, and hopefully get together with my new friends.

Great story! Or should I say journalistic reporting as you have pictures to prove it? Those pictures are awesome! Makes me want to pack up right now and drive back up. My buddy and I just started hunting FSJ last year. This year we both got our first moose up there. Were you past FSJ or near Wonowon? Any Grizzlies?

Thanks everyone,

Tarp Man, we were very close to Fort St. John - near Taylor. Below is a picture with the Peace River in the background. The amount of game trails we saw coming off the breaks into the fields was incredible. We spent alot of time glassing those breaks for bucks.

Regarding grizzlies, a local landowner mentioned he's only seen one grizz in this area since he's been there. However, the area is heavily cultivated with lots of food for everything. One alfalfa field near the gas plant at Taylor must have had hundreds of deer hanging. Never seen that much game before.

Atri, next time you are up give me a buzz, I live in Taylor and I know the place you were and can show you a spot on the other side of the river with lots of monsters on it as well. There is a feild over by the mill i go to somtimes with a coffee to watch the deer. Last saturday there was four moose and over 150 deer in it. LAst year in the three herds we counted over 200 in that valley at one time. It is a hunters dream this place!!!!
