Just got back from a hunting trip near Fort St. John. My hunting partner graciously offered to show me around some private land that has had some nice bucks. We safaried around for a few days and saw lots of does, a bunch of illegal bucks (one monster 3 x3 that we couldn't make legal), a couple of glimpses at some large bucks, a snowy owl, a couple of moose cows (one cow had two calfs), and the occassional grouse.

We passed up a decent 4 x 3 and small 4 x4, hoping that the wall hanger was just around the corner. But after a few days without cutting a tag, we decided that we would take the next legal buck. We jumped this 4 x 2 in the long grass. He stood up not 30 yards from the truck, and slowly began to walk away. A quick shot to the neck and we had our first deer.

The compulsory inspection confirmed that he was an inmature buck. Good eating, I hear
We hunted a few more days until this guy showed up. We watched him for a few minutes and determined that he was a 4 x 4, with decent mass and length. We were able to get to a 240 yds from him. The shot was in the brisket. He hunched up on bullet impact as blood gushed out the wound. He didn't move and let us get to within 40 yards for the coup de grace to the neck. He turned out to be a 5 x 4. The inspector figures the buck was about 4 years old.

The trip was a terrific initiation to Region 7. With some luck, I'd like to try the early moose season, and hopefully get together with my new friends.
