We (girlfriend and I) got out to our normal hunting grounds around 13:40 in the afternoon. As we started to hike some of the logging trails, we saw a couple deer, but not a single sign of bear, no tracks no poo, nothing. Just a whole lot of disappointment.

So we decided to try a different spot, and got about 10km up a old logging road, and had to stop as the road was just covered from a rock slide. I stopped the truck left the girlfriend sleeping in the truck, and went for a hike. i hiked about 2 hours will only spotting one bear track and some poo, about 2-3 days old. So again walked away with nothing.

As we where heading, trying to get the girlfriend back to baseball, I had a gut feeling to try this area on the way out. As we drove up the logging roads to the pot i started seeing deer every where, and for some reason they where so spooked that i would see them then they where gone, none of this standing there looking at the dumb bear hunter!

the time was 17:45, As we continued looking up in the woods making our way higher, i started looking up in the tree line, and all of a sudden I hear my girlfriend yell out bear, I quickly look infront of me and there was the huge black bear running into the woods, so i get out, and sneak down to the spot where he went in, and sure enough there he was standing 15 yards away in the trees, taunting me. I looked for a shot and there was none, bush was way too thick and too dark, So i sneak down to a river around the corner and start climbing i get about 60 yards up it when i step on a rock slip, smack my rifle onto a rock, taking a chip out of the stock and the scope. So i turn around knowing that my suprise for the bear was gone.

I get back to my truck and tell my girlfriend we'll get way up top and see if he comes out into a slash. as we climb we keep seeing more and more deer, same respone. So when we got up to the top i started to sneak along this really old logging road. As i looked around check the wind, i started noticing fresh tracks, Hmmm was the bear already up here couldn't be a well i'll push on and see if he up the ways. As i walked threw a stream i saw a really fresh track in the water, i look up and about 200 yards i see a brown butt, i look and sure enough theres a cinnamon bear sitting in this old creek bed, i see it walk down and i loose site of it. So i check the wind and its coming towards me so im like awesome it wont even know im here. so as i get closer i get withing 100 yards and all of a sudden the wind changes from behind me, i knew right away cause im bald (the beauty of being bald) so i toke aim for the opening, and sure of enough it come booking out of there like someone lit a fire under its butt. So just as it turned broad side i fired, man did i miss, but about half a foot, so now i know my scope is off big time. So i try quickly to get a elevated shot, when it goes over the ledge down towards slashes threw the thick woods. So i track it for a bit and get about 400 yards in the bush down the hill and find no blood and no injurie markings, so i knew i totally missed. So again 2nd bear but no kill, at this point my girlfriends not saying nothing to me cause im pissed knowing that my scope is off and i've just lost a really really nice bear. We walk back to the truck, and started to head out. Kicking myself all the way down threw the slashes.

All of a sudden i here o my gosh, i look and this bear is standing there staring at me about 45 yards away. I quickly get out of the truck tell the girlfriend to film and i took aim, ( this time i compensated for the scope being off, and BOOM first shot the bear gets hit in the chest the bear takes off, i quickly re-load and BOOM broad side hit, the bear tumbles back and then it was all over.

As i got to the bear it didn't look that big cause it was curled up, checked to make sure it was dead, and then on i wen dragging this beast out. it weighed around 320lbs, so a nice size.

So gutted it, wraped it and started to head out, on out way out we see another cinnamon bear on the road, so in totall that day we saw 23 deer, and 4 bears. This has been the best week of my life!

Heres a few photos and when i upload the photo to you tube i will post it.

Nice bear for sure. Are you sure he was 320 lbs? Many bear hunters over-estimate their bears by about 100 lbs.

04-30-2009, 02:32 PM
well i know i can bench press 290lbs and this thing with guts in, i couldn't lift it, but with guts out i could just barely lift it into the truck. so im guessing its around that

Moving dead, warm meat is always harder than concentrated 'hard' weight like a barbell. At least I have found that.
