Travelled to Creston this weekend for my Grandpa's 78th Birthday. I was able to come back with some of the old family photo albums. Along with the pics I received the entire collection of Wild Sheep mags from inception until now, the entire collection of B&C record books along with some older and hard to find sheep literature as well.

Enjoy... These pics span through the 60's, 70's, 80's and early 90's. Two of their earliest albums were stolen from their booth at a convention one year.

There is plenty more where these came from... I've got lots of day dreaming material now. The photo albums made the ferry ride back to the island the most enjoyable in years.

Nope, It's not Stone Mtn. The only way you could have seen these photos was to attend some of the big hunting conventions back in the day and visit their booth. It's possible you've seen some of them featured in Hunting Magazines as well but they would have to be older.. Or you sat down with my Grandpa and went through them.... These albums have been under lock and key for years and he still has hundreds of photos he hasn't released to me yet... lol, I got two albums for now and all of their blown up display pics. 1 album is just sheep, the other Moose/Caribou.

The man on the left was a retired helicopter pilot who served in vietnam. His first year hunting with them they hunted for 21 days and due to bad weather, fog, rain, snow concurrently they didn't see a single legal ram.

He came back the next year and was guided by my Grandpa and took this 41" ram. Both of these rams are 40"s and were taken together.

My dad had spotted the rams and was looking at them through his spotting scope, taking turns with the two hunters. They were all excited about these rams and my Grandpa hadn't even got a look yet, let alone knew where they were. Everytime he bent down to look through the spotter they'd bump it just enough so there was nothing in the frame... He thought they were bs'ing him about the rams and he was getting more and more pissed off at their little game so eventually they folded and let him have a look... Two more hard earned rams.

21 years as a sheep guide for my Grandpa... He taught a few guys a thing or two about sheep hunting. When a group of Mexican hunters came hunting one year they informed my dad in camp that they refused to eat meals with any of the native crew present. They figured they were above that...

My dad told them "Fine... you can eat when they've finished then!" :)

Here's one of the aformentioned Mexicans with his 43" x 38" ram.

Do you have a Macro setting on your camera? It's is the symbol that looks like a flower. If so, turn it on and try the pics again, this should help the camera focus better on those close up pics.

By the way, what bunch of dink rams...lol just joking, those are some fine specimens. Looking forward to hunting them again someday soon.

Bigwhiteys, have you ever shot a stone sheep? These are some incredible specimens. There is definitely something special about looking at old family photos of hunting, fishing, and trapping. I often go through my nana's albums while visiting. The photos of her dad and uncles trapping and hunting are wicked. I am glad you value these pictures as much as I would, the stories that accompany many of them would keep me occupied for years I am sure. Make sure you write some of them down before your grandpa gets too old, they are family heirlooms.

Many of the stories are mine and are being put on paper. It's too bad that during the day, video camera's and batteries weren't what they are today. We used to try and get footage but between wet broken camera's and lack of current bushes to charge batteries, I thought camera's to be a pain in the ass. Now that I've been away from it for a few years, I'm wishing that we had put forth a better effort on both pictures and notes. When looking at these photo's though most of the memories come back, like it was just a few days ago when they took place. When I get more time, I might put a few on here for the readers.

Bigwhiteys, have you ever shot a stone sheep?

Not Yet, I am holding out for something special. If I really just had to have one on the wall that would have happened for me already. It's gotta be something special... 40" or 10+ years old is my benchmark :) Trying again this year.

I am glad you value these pictures as much as I would, the stories that accompany many of them would keep me occupied for years I am sure.

The stories never get old, but they are slowly dissapearing... Many of the guides are long gone, and most the hunters too. There was a bunch of 8 track movies that we had developed into a DVD about the family/history etc... with my Grandpa narrating. I wish there was more written material though to go along with the pictures. Willy was along on most of these hunts so maybe he can chime in with a story or two. These were all hard earned rams.

Thanks for the eye candy bigwhiteys, aka Carl. That black faced hunter, although a master of changing physical appearance certainly got around. Perhaps he was a shape shifter and as such was very sneaky as per FN folk lore:)

Good luck in your own quest in '09. I am sure that your Grandpa is proud of your standards and personal goals. Any chance that you can take the old boy out for a stroll down memory lane this year? Sounds like Willy442 would be quick to volunteer to tag along as well. You could leave them down low on some old forgotten horse trail to swap lies all day long while you climbed the hills.

I think my favorite thing would be to take my Grandpa and Dad each for a ride in a supercub again one day. It's a little late for that dream now but it would be cool to repay them for all the hours in the mountain air I got to log with them as a kid. Experiences like that sure get a guy hooked on these special places.

They are pretty much done their sheep hunting. If it weren't for my interest these pictures would likely still be crated up and in a shed. I do get some detailed first hand maps, and some pretty seasoned advice but I don't have access to all of the rigging they had at one time either which makes it more challenging.

This old boy below was 80 years old when he harvested this ram... He harvested a Billy Goat on the same trip.

Yes, they never get old... Some really good ones. My Grandpa was on the hunt where they took the #2 Stone's ram (Norman Blanks) that's a good story... And another good one is when my Dad was guiding Craig Boddington and they lost two of the biggest rams he'd ever found in some really think fog in a high pass never to be found again...

It would have been something to hunt with them back in their prime... They would probably school us... There was a Different kind of "tough" back then.

I've been after them to do this for years!!!! But they were guides and not writers which is part of the problem. They look at the photos and it all comes back. I need to sit down with a tape recorder and go through them so they can just talk and I'll record.

The small amount of photos I have posted don't even scratch the surface. Many of the best rams still haven't been posted and I might just save some of them for a rainy day or a book if it ever was to happen.

I hope you all enjoy looking at them as much as I do.

This 47" Stone Ram was a pickup along the Racing River... He was found with another cranker of a ram but no idea what happened to the other.

They both died in an avalanche... My Grandpa had this one life-sized and in the early 80's sold it for a good chunk of change to a museum in Colorado or Montana? I can't recall exactly where it resides now but it's still around.

lol... Robert has a few of their pictures already and published a couple in his first book.

Here are a few titles I like:

"To The Top - 30 years of Hunting Stone Sheep In BC."
"One More Ridge - 30 years of Stone Sheep Hunting in BC."
"Once Upon A Rocky Mountain - Great Stone Rams & Sheep Hunting Tales From Northern BC."

These need to be put together. I'll step up and offer any assistance in gathering info for short stories of the hunts and/ or hunters. I've got a bit of writing experience.

I've been on them for a while to get something in the works. Thank you for your offer it is much appreciated. I've already been in contact with a few of the old hunters who are still alive through Grandslam and FNAWS, others I've had to track down through the Internet and many more are deceased or who knows where.

There is one Guide I am looking for, great sheep guide, spent quite a few years with them and I know he continued guiding sheep for Olmstead, then moved onto guiding somewhere in the Yukon.

This picture below would make a good story... I can't believe I was so eager to fly with this guy! I didn't understand all the "white knuckle" jokes as a kid.

They both died in an avalanche... My Grandpa had this one life-sized and in the early 80's sold it for a good chunk of change to a museum in Colorado or Montana? I can't recall exactly where it resides now but it's still around.

Wasn't there a video on here a while ago about this trip? Thanks for posting all the great pics.

If you still have a link to the auction please forward it on I'd like to take a look... This ram resided in a museum in California I believe... My Grandpa sold it to the museum owner for around $25,000 USD in 1982 or 1983...

just checked it must have sold I dont know if you can check ebay history but it stands to reason it may be the same one, how many 47 inch stones are running around in museums? When I saw it the price was up to 15,000, out of my price range but very cheap for such an amazing specimen!!

Darn... I wish I got to see it... That could very likely be the ram. If it was located in California then for sure it was him.

I should probably add that there was nobody harmed in the pictured plane crash... My Grandpa was alone for this one and was able to drag his ass out and stumble down the runway home where my Grandma beat him up for giving her such a scare...! (she watched it happen)

My Dad and Grandpa love to laugh at all our high tech sheep gear... If you hunted with Willy your best bet was to try and stay ahead of him or you'd be looking at this aaaaaall day.

This ram now hangs in a sporting goods shop in Montana somewhere... He spent his days in an area that was not out of reach for guys hiking in.

Willy said they didn't have all the fancy light weight clothing we have now so he had to improvise. The secret to sheep hunting in your wranglers was exceptionally good ventilation. It was all for function, not fit.

I asked him how fun it was to climb up through thick and rough shit in jeans and he said "Tiny Steps, my friend... Tiny Steps" :)

That ram has been posted on here a few times before. He is a 6.5 year old 42" Book Ram. If he'd made it to be 10-11 he would have been a real pig.

http://www.bchuntingblog.com/sheepics/ram31.jpg

They were pretty sure he was the offspring of this ram below... who was 13 when he fell... My dad put 3 different hunters onto this ram over 3 seasons and by the time they finally shot him they figured he had broomed off about 8-9" of horn.
