They are starting to show up guys. Took a new hunter out for his first bear this weekend, showed him 3, and gave him the first right of refusal. After his second shot, at the third bear, I had to walk alone to the right place and right time around a corner and make a lucky standing freehand shot on a nice meat bear. Such a fun hunt. Can't wait to fill my second tag. Saw 6 bears in 6 hours. Pictures should be up in the morning.

All in all it was a good trip. Special thanks go out to my friend Elkhound who pointed me in a good direction, and gave me hope that I would find some bears.

It was very exciting to take a new hunter out, he got some shots off but no bears were injured by him. Needs some more experience behind the butt of a 300 win mag.

Bear was 5 foot from nose to tail. All the meat was taken and I will be trying to metalize the skull.

Well done ! Can you tell me where you hunt??

I hunt on the north side of van island and on the sunshine coast. Anywhere you go there will be bears, at low to medium elevations. Buy a backroads map book and drive some logging roads looking for pooh and green grass. Don't hunt where there is no grass. I dont see how you couldnt get one if you spent a weekend in the bush. Bring a big gun because if you dont kill it properly it may be very very upset with you.

LOL.....hey Paul...You would recognise that spot too eh?

Nice job guys....glad you nailed one. Thought you would. So the question is......did the bear have to stay in the truck during the wedding or did you get him after:shock: Is your wife mad at me for telling you where the bears should be? LOL

Again...congrats.....nice bear. Curious...what color was the fat...yellow or white?

Fat was white, removed it all yesterday, and all of the silver skin and tendons. Ready to be learned how to make some peperoni.

I'm still just a rookie trying to learn... what does the different fat color indicate?

Thanks

In a cow, the white fat indicates that it was finished on grain, the yellow fat means it was a grass eater.

No idea about bears, virtually all of the ones I've skinned had pretty white fat.

EH and I are on a learnin' curve..... We're trying to evaluate table fare w/ association of fat colour.

I almost always ask this question then kindly ask for a report on 'stink' and eating qualities - I've never had a yellow one, all were white and tasted GREAT!

Elkhound
04-29-2009, 11:02 PM
yup...I was told by an old hunter at one time that yellow fat means a bad tasting bear. Maybe the amount of skunk cabbage eaten maybe? Thats my theory anyway.

White fat means good meat.....so far the old guy has been right on the money with myself and friends bears. All white fat bears have been tasty......2 yellow fat bears we coud not even choke down......So its a question I and Dean have put forth many times to see if the record holds...I find it interesting.

Well, I will disagree.

I've skinned and eaten a number of white fat bears that were horrible tasting.

What they all had in common was that they were fish eating coastal bears, and they were large, mature boars.

I picked up a few sausage making supplies recently. Luckily I had a good guy on the site, who I recently met, come over and show me how to put the things together. They turned out absolutley amazing, thanks to him, I fed it to a bunch of non wild game eaters, and two of them said the chorizo sausage was the best they had EVER had. The others all liked it too. Then I bbq'ed up a few steaks and everyone enjoyed them too! I was shocked. The peperoni turned out good too, but I think I oversmoked a batch of it, so the other batch was done in the oven and turned out just great! Thanks goes out to MR. DEAN who moderated my sausage making.

lol...I am sure the fish eating bears would be bad....The ones I hunt on the coast were no where near fish habitat so it was not an issue.

Bigbore......I will be right over for a taste test...

HEY!!!

If that smoke-house stuff is over your threshold, I can find a way of making it disapear.

G'luck on your next hunt.

I've never hunted the area, looks like a nice area... I'm on the ferry over daughters lacrosse game and I'm thinking I should have brought the hounds for a afternoon chase
