Here's how to get the LEH Zones Map digitally.

1) Hold control and click on this link.
iMapBC public - Make a Map (http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/imf.jsp?site=imapbc)

2) Once it has loaded, the first thing I usually do is turn off the Landsat image (to speed up the search)

Click 'Layers' (on the top bar) then on the right bar click 'images' and uncheck the landsat option.

3) On the right at the top, click '[add / remove] (javascript:openLayerManager('http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/ext/bcgov/imap/imfAddLayers.jsp'))'
In the box that appears click http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/lcf.gif (javascript:openFolder('5'))Fish Wildlife and Plant Species
scroll about halfway down and click http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/layeroff13x13.gif (javascript:handleGroup(5,172,true))Limited Entry Hunting Zones - All Species - Current Yearhttp://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/pixel.gifhttp://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/layers.gif (javascript:showGroup(5,172,true))

4) Close this box. On the right you will see your layers. Scroll down and you will see the LEH layers as per species. By default they are all checked.

Note that you won't see anything until you zoom into an area.
Once you zoom in the layers become active. If you click beside the layer name on the little 'i' http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/lln.gif http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/lpx.gifhttp://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/layeron12x12.gif (javascript:setLayerVisibility(3061,'LV3061',365)) http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/lpx.gifhttp://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/thmIdOn13x13.gif (javascript:setIdentifyLayer(3061,'ID3061',365))ht tp://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/lpx.gifLimited Entry Hunting Zones - All -Current Year - Outlined (javascript:openMetadataHandler(3061))http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/images/symbolize.gif (http://webmaps.gov.bc.ca/imfx/imfSymbolizeLayerForm.jsp?loid=3061)

Then additional info becomes available. Click on that 'i' then go to the top op the screen and click on the top 'i'. The click on the area you are interested in. You can use the coordinates markup to record zone boundaries, etc. Lots of possibilities if you play.

You can also get the iMap LEH zones or MU zones to overlay on Google Earth, which I find REALLY handy!

Imap bc is a very useful tool once you know how to and what you can utilize.

Just cause its that time of year I'd thought I'd bring it to the top again./...

Now the ultimate question is - how do I import the LEH Zones from Google Earth to Mapsource and then to my Garmin 60Csx.... :-| Anyone have any ideas?

Didn't you hear, the LEH is cancelled this year.;)

Other then that it should be possible though, you should be able to dump the line out of IMAP for use in your GPS. I have done something similar but it was awhile ago. If no one comes up with a solution, I will try and figure it for you when I am back to work

I managed to do it using all free tools, though it's certainly not point and click. There may be an easier way but these are the steps I followed.

1. Download LEH zones from GeoBC (http://www.geobc.gov.bc.ca/). (Click Download, Guest Users, Accept, Configurable Products, Fish Wildlife and Plant Species, LEH Zones - Current Opportunities Polygon "+" to the right, View Your Order, choose options, Submit. I used lat/long and Arcview shape file format.) After unzipping this gives you a 65+ MB ".shp" shapefile containing all 414 of the the LEH zones.

2. Download MapWindow GIS (http://www.mapwindow.org/). Open the shapefile from step 1. Select one zone of interest and use the GIS Tools --> Vector --> Export Selected Shapes to New Shapefile.

3. Download DNRGarmin (http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/arcview/extensions/DNRGarmin/DNRGarmin.html). Open the single zone shapefile you just created (Load From --> File), and save as a GPX file (Save To --> File, choose GPX in the file format popup).

4. Open this GPX in MapSource, filter to a reasonable number of track points, and transfer to your GPS.

Like I said, there is probably an easier way but this worked for me. I tried uploading to geocommons (it accepts shapefiles), saving as KML, then using gpsbabel to translate to GPX, but that didn't work. DNRGarmin was the first one I found that saves the polygon from the shapefile as a track. It choked on the big shapefile, hence the need for MapWindow GIS to extract a single zone at a time.

Caveat - I did an extra step using MapWindow GIS to reproject the shapefile using WGS84. However I think DNRGarmin might do this automatically. YMMV.

Converting the shape to a track, as opposed to some kind of map, allows it to be displayed on top of whatever maps you have already loaded.

For non-Garmin users, gpsbabel (http://www.gpsbabel.org/) could probably be used to translate the GPX output from DNRGarmin into whatever format your brand of GPS needs.

Good luck :) Now all we need are the draw results...

The easiest way is from GeoBC. Click this link:

http://www.ilmb.gov.bc.ca/dm/wms/kml_files/GeoBC%20Web%20Map%20Services.kmz

Open it with Google Earth. A whole series of possible layers should appear in the Places box on the left side of the window. Under "Wildlife and Plant Species" you'll see a radio button for "Limited Entry Hunting Zones" and a bunch of check boxes to display all zones or zones for individual species.

Can anyone point me to the correct layer to use to be sure that I'll be on Crown land and not some private rancher, etc.?

I've got it working but prefer the straight IMapBC and working between them. I just can't find the layer that will show me what is Crown vs. private land. I'd like to do some online scouting before my October trip. I have one of those pesky M-F jobs with specific holiday time in the summer. Very handy for pay cheques but not for having a ton of time for extended hunting. It means than when I'm in the bush I really want to know what areas not to waste my time on.

1. Anyone have any idea as to which layer to click on with IMAP to show power lines?
2. Anyone have any idea as to why many of the FSR's that were evident on IMAP last year don't appear to be this year? Is there a layer I'm neglecting to add?

that DNR Garmin is exactly the software I was looking for. What an awesome tool to do some route planning in google maps and upload to the gps.

I am also using shape2kml to take shape files and make them readable in google earth. http://www.zonums.com/shp2kml.html The only problem with it is it hasn't been supported for a couple of years and it has a license error when you load it up (it will say license expired). All you have to do is turn your computer clock back to 2008 and it will work fine.
