I fish the Columbia a lot this time of year, the best success by far is with a well tied black ant, and honestly the only fly I use this early in the season.

Sounds about right. I used to fly fish a bit and all I can say is my lunch room has a major hatch of ants going on in it for the last couple of days(the buggers are fully winged and trying to get out and all over the coffee mate);).

This time of year I'd be using a sinking line with any kind of leach/doc spratley/muddler minnow type of fly. But if you want to dry-fly fish I'd agree and say an ant would be a good bet.

Water is low still and I haven't heard any reports to get excited about. Have seen a few boats out there though in the past week and the girl is doing the creel count above the Keenlyside. So something must be happening, or they wouldn't be out there yet. Haven't checked out downstream in the D-D area. Waiting for the Cicada hatch.
