Do you just hike like hell while looking at the ground? How and what are your motivations for this hobby?

I can answer this one.
You really have to be able to recognize prime mule deer winter range, then after that, you have to identify areas that big bucks prefer. Sometimes I hike for an hour to get to a certain spot before I even start looking, then my eyes survey every inch like radar!
Other times when driving into some new area, I just stop and say, now that looks like a spot to find some tine. Ive run over to the spot I saw and bingo, sheds lying right there, Ive actually done this lots!
Motivations??? Im collecting deer racks without killing the deer! Also tells me what kind of bucks are living on the mountain, find giant sheds, maybe spend lots of time there in the fall!
Not to mention its damm addicting!

Although Mark's advice is pretty much bang on he forgot to mention the one dirty little secret of shed hunting.

Do you want to know it??

It is REALLY REALLY tough to stop looking at the ground and start looking for live animals come fall. If anyone has some helpfull tips to stop this behaviour please share them. Mind you sometimes it helps, as one of my best bucks was shot as I was busy scooping up shed antlers and tying them to my pack. Shot the buck just seconds after securing a 180" winter kill to my pack. Looked pretty funny coming back to camp with blood on my hands, no fresh antler or meat but about ten good sheds tied to my pack. Went back the next day to pack the fresh one out.

X 2 what mark said.

Its hardcore scouting. You learn about the bucks in the areas you're going to hunt, before they even know you've been there, learn the terrain, different approaches etc (wind) so you can slip in without crashing into his favorite slope and educating him.
Makes it that much more exciting when you finally pull his card.

Plus any day in deer country is a good day.
