Went out for a really long hike today and managed to locate a group of about 20 elk on a southern slope.

They sure like to hold onto their antlers a long time.

Hey Husq good camera work. It seems that elk hold on longer than other antlered animals, must grow new ones faster or somethin.
I guess you picked up a few ticks when hikin around? Those trees look healthy too.
Take that camera out again good shots.

hard to believe but i saw a whitetail buck with one antler left yesterday. elk as a rule are the last to shed and the first to lose their velvet. saw five bull elk with both sides last week. three branched antlered bulls and two spikes.

last year i was lucky enough to draw a grizz tag in 4-26 and i went out the week of may 18th ,every day i was seeing between 50 and 150 elk and although i found numerous sheds i was still seeing bone on elk .i believe and correct me if i'm wrong but it all pertains to the availability and qualitty of thier food sorces that makes the switch to drop and regrow those beautiful pieces of bone.

Well the habitat where these cows and young bulls are foraging is loaded with yellow & green grass and plenty of buds on the shrubs. Though I haven't seen any recent evidence that they're still browsing.

I expect that they just need a good knock on the noggin pretty quick.

As soon as I see evidence that they're dropping i'll be out scouring the hillside.

I have seen at least 10 spike and only 1 branch antlered bull still wearing bone in the last week. I have not been able to find any large bulls with thier head gear still attached. I have seen in the past a whitetail buck still in velvet in March it was a wierd thing. Has anyone else ever come across this phenomina>

Selfish critters aren't they? Not wanting to share with us! Nasty.
