They out swimming already with just fluff on? Or did you see them on the park lawn? We'll have to open up a popcorn stand at the boat launch at Quamichan and sell it to the locals who feed the birds there to fatten up those geese for us :D We'll have to sell the popcorn with butter on them to make the geese butter balls :D

Where I lived back east the ducks would leave the parks just before dark and head for the estuaries a couple of km away. You'd shoot fat ducks with bread and popcorn in their crops.

Marc,
I didn't see the goslings myself a reliable birder friend spotted them this a.m.
There are two pairs sitting on eggs at Geoff's pond.
He says the next pond over from his must have a shitload too from all
the racket they are making??
Lots more Lessers and Specks going over the house again this morning.
They must have wintered well down south?
I read in the birder coloumn they are still addling goose eggs around
Englishman River estuary! How very progressive of them!!:cool:
Why don't the idiots just open it to hunting???
Cheers,
Field Marshal.

I haven't seen any goslings yet but there are more nests this year around Quamichan. The geese are nesting on boat houses, burn piles and even in the eagle nests.
Seeing lots of wood ducks when out fishing.
The bull frogs are really loud at night. There is going to be thousands in the lake this year.

Haven't seen any goslings or duckings yet down here in MU 1-1.

The wild goose numbers down in the saanich penninsula on the big flat farms are huge compared to last years. My dad and I drive down the farm roads there just to see how many local geese there are. All of the geese have split up into pairs about 3 weeks ago.

There is TONS of wild ducks in the penninsula aswell. When my dad and I drive along those same farm feild roads, we see hundreds of mallards, some widgeon, and a couple of pintails out in the dry feilds. The ducks seemed to split into pairs a little later than the geese. I also have never seen this many geese or ducks down here in the spring before.

We are also seeing a lot of ducks around for this late in the spring. Mostly mallards but saw some teal the other day.

Last week my dad and I saw a pair of geese with goslings down where our boat is. Those are the first ones spotted yet for us.

The tide was also WAY out that day and out in the mud there were around 150 teal. Hopefully we see some more goslings out there. will try to take some pictures if I see them.

At one spot I saw around 3-4 pairs with like 10-20 goslings all running around the island. Pretty early and neat to see.

no predators = safe!
building tenants are getting wild life control in because the parents are getting aggressive.

Sorry to highjack or deroute from the hunting related thread :)

Geese can easily lead their chicks to water a mile or two but the problem I see is the drop, looks pretty high from there dont know how well they'll coast down once hatched.

Checked out the island birding report for Thursday May 14.
Seems one of the hotshot midisland birders saw 164 goslings on the
Parksville , Qualicum estuary Wed. morning. He called their numbers
obscene ??? I call it wonderful recruitment !!:lol: Locally numbers are also
quite high lots of goslings on the lakes and even Cowichan estuary had good hatches. Usually the otters raise hell with goose eggs at the Bay.
Not this year!!! Looks promising for Fall! Oh and yes I am Also an avid birder. I think most good waterfowlers are also excellent birders. If not
they should be. Have a safe Summer everyone and take a kid fishing:biggrin::biggrin:.
Cheers, Field Marshal.

I saw my first gosling today, unfortunately he was getting carried away by a crow  I would encourage any one who is bored or looking for some off season practice to try calling and decoying some of the black buggers. I have shot a few but haven't tried calling and decoying yet. I'd like to though.

My dad and I went out crabbing yesterday (Crabbing was great) and saw tons of geese and some sets of goslings in our marina. We also saw a ton of brant around 700-800 where we were crabbing. First time i have ever seen them on the south part of the island. Usually we have lots of speckle-bellies on the crab grounds but not this year. I cant wait till october!
