both knives are made by stock removal out of S30V barstock and feature fully tapered tangs, brass bolsters and pins and indian ebony handles

I like the little one, I can see it being good for detail work around heads and such, what's the purpose of the top feature?
thats exactly the purpose of the little guy, its a caping knife, meant for the detail work when taking the skulls out of the animal.
i am not sure what you mean by "top feature", are you referring to the larger knife? or the grooves in the little caper?

Probably to place the end of your pointer finger on so it doesnt slip off.
So you can poke the point into smaller areas with better controll.
the grooves in the caping knife are meant so the finger doesnt slip off the blade when caping out around the skull.
for caping purposes that knife is held with the pointer finger resting along the top of the knife into the grooves

Nice set you have there.
Are you selling them?
these will be for sale once i finish the sheaths, there is a third that will be part of this set.
blacktail--the ebony used on these knives is indian ebony and as you can see vary in color with greyish, brownish and blackish running through it.
pm me i can let you know where i get it from.
