My uncle killed many a moose with his out to 200y. As soon as you start worrying about numbers and not about putting the lead where it matters, you're in trouble. I wouldn't hesitate to tackle any big game in BC with one

I have my great grandfathers .300 savage (M99) - it has killed more deer, moose and elk than I ever will.

Just put the bullet in the right spot and it'll do fine.

perfectly capable cartridge of handling most any game in BC within moderate ranges (250 yards). Factory ammo is 150 gr @ 2630 fps or 180 gr @ 2350 fps, usually runs $30-35 a box and not easily found in most shops.

Cambodian Tire usually has 180 grain federal blue box - about $25 last box I bought. I have my great uncle's old model 99 in 300 sav and also would not hesitate to take anything within reach of peep sights. Phil

I met this retired big game guide from up in the Chilcotin who swore that the most successful moose calibre he ever saw in action was the 300 Savage and the worst for wounding was the 270 Winchester.

This is from the days before everybody and his quad had a 338 Turbo Speedwhizz Ultra Magnum.

I wish i had my dads old 300savage 99, great gun but his brother stole it a long time ago, i think i still have a few rounds for it in the bottom of the ammo box.

I believe his experiences would be correct when both cartridges are used with simple soft points like most older ammo was used with. A 180 gr @ 2300 fps is going to expand alot slower and hold together better than a 130 gr @ 3000 fps out of a 270, especially when bone is hit. If you load a Nosler Partition in a 270, or a Barnes X or similar deep penetrating bullet which holds together at high speed, the 270 will be just as dependable as anything, and make hitting a moose past 200 yards alot easier than a 300 Savage. Not trying to take away from the 300 Savage...Im just sayin!

IMO the 300 Savage is a good cartridge in an excellent caliber. I think of it as the middle man between the .30-.30 and the .308 win:-).

I won't argue with you Todd. I'm repeating Chilco's opinion which as you indicated, was formed in the 1950s and 60s.

I own one and I can honestly say It's killed more big game than I have and I've owned it for 30yrs. Great gun, no recoil.kill anything, anywhere, cleanly out to 300yds.

Ironically, I heard the exact same thing from a guide in Northern Ontario.

I owned one once upon a time, 300 Savage Model 99F, rotary magazine.
You can kill deer, elk, moose and black bear. It is a very marginal cartridge for grizzly and should only be used on them in a self defense situation. The other thing is that they are not much good beyond 200 yards, you just cannot pack enough powder into that small case. Their case capacity is less that 308 Win.
I used to reload that cartridge using an early version of Hornaday reloading manual. There was a mistake in the loading data for the 300 Sav and there were severe pressure indications at middle of the data listing. I experienced hard shell extraction and I mean hard. I can atest to the strength of the action. You certainly could not get as lucky with a Win. Model 94.
Anyhow, I don't have one anymore and if I did, I'd just hang it on the mantle.
