I'm looking to start my first, of how many I don't know, and was wondering where you get your steel? And what would be a good price? Thanks

I have been getting into it pretty seriously over the last year. My first batch of supplies came from the supplier posted by Blacktail - would recomend them again. there is also a store in Langley " Metal Supermarket (on 92A Ave) which can order in various steel, brass and copper types ( for guards etc) . Check out my blog I have a some recomended books and websites. Give me a PM or e-mail if you have any questions.

I live in the west end of Vancouver and would love to take a knife making course...would be very good to have the piece of steel you use in the field made by yourself. :)

i am not in the lower mainland, but i do order a fair bit of my supplies from Rob and Marilyn ,( knifemaker.ca ) as others have posted.
it all depends on our dollar, and how much i am going to order. When our dollar gets strong i order steel from Admiral Steel, even small quantities from them are sometimes cheaper even with delivery charges.
there is a bunch of different suppliers you can go through in the U.S. but here in Canada we are limited.
there is also one in Ontario that has a real decent supply of everything.

What kind of knifemaking are you looking to getting into?
i build all my knives by the STOCK REMOVAL method, which is all by hand using files and sandpapers. I have quite a bit of information on that if you would like some. just send me a PM and i would be happy to help.
Blacktail is a knifemaker as well, looking at his art work, he may be able to help you out with grinders and such.

Well I put in an order to knifemakers.ca and an email to Admiral asking if they ship to Canada. I found this link somewhere, making knives on the cheap,
http://hossom.com/tutorial/jonesy/ (http://hossom.com/tutorial/jonesy/)
and figured I'd give it a try. I've looked local for spring steel but the auto guys all seem to have sprung steel so I will order that from Admiral.

Conrad - I like the small skinning knife on dec 12 blog. Where did you get the idea for the One Brick Forge?

And I'll be doing the stock removal method so I'll be picking your brain at a later point Ddog

I basically use the stock removal method as well like jonesy does with the drill press and I use a grinder to shape the blade.
I have a big wheel type of sanding belt like the grizzly machine which helps to hollow grind blades.A ten inch wheel is about the best.

After that I heat treat and polish which isnt really all that hard if you use the right stuff

I started making knives about 35 years ago when I worked in a sawmill and have just recently started back into it about 4 years ago.I still have a shitload of old planer blades (some new ones too....lol) and a bunch of different steels in reserve from that time.

If you fellas want a quick and cheap way to build a knife without any of the expertise needed to grind blades, you could always order up preground blades from a knife supply house (these are from Janz). All you have to do is put your own handle material on them. For less than $60 or so you can build a pretty knife.

These are a few of designs available (much like those that our very own Blacktail ground and heat treated himself from scratch (in the photos below)).

its kinda funny, alot of people order those blade blanks or kits put it together and call it a handmade knife. I have seen quite a few for sale in different places and it just makes me shake my head. not that there is anything wrong with doing it, its just that they put a huge mark-up on them before selling them.
By the By stonechaser, a correction...its called JANTZ knife supply. i have ordered from them in the past to.
i would rather support canadians though, no i am not prejudice , i hate everyone the same:)

Thanks StoneChaser but I think I want to go for the "from scratch" experiance. I think the hard part will be designing the knife and handle. So I'm going to go around and try out different grips and see what i like best. What are the scales made of on the top right knife?

The two caping knives I make came from patterns a friend in Ohio had
Knives of Alaska makes the one with the finger cutouts
A buddy of mine had one and I drew out the patterns

The one on the top right is Acrylic scales pretty brittle and I probably won't be using that stuff again

I get a lot of my steel from the guy in Ohio,he is kinda related(married to a cousins wife sister sort of thing) and gets me some good deals on steel and handle material.
The rest of the stuff I like to keep canadian
