I would say, the biggest rifle you can comfortably shoot well, loaded with a good bullet. This may be a 270 Winchester for some, a 375 H&H for others.

.338 Winmag, not too punishing on you, plenty punishing on bears. But yeah, do a search and be prepared to spend all day reading!

.338 Win Mag is my choice. Loaded with Barnes TSX 225 or 250 gr. it will handle anything you run into on this continent and lots in Africa too. Apparently properly loaded, many African PH will allow it for Buffalo. But as always, it's the nut behind the trigger that is the most important part of any gun. With so many excellent choices out there you have a great menu to select from. I went with the .338 because it is so versatile. One of my favorite Black Bear loads is 210 gr. (used to be Noslers and I stll respect the hell out that bullet) TSX. It puts them down hard and if I do happen to run into something nasty with a hump on the shoulders, I know that I'm not under gunned for the occasion either

:D I'd go with a minimum of 30.06 and good bonded bullets, if you can shoot a larger calibre accurately than go with that. A lot of guys use a .338 Win Mag, and it does a great job on big game. Of course, if you're a macho hombre and you want to show your machismo to the world, get your hands on a .460 Weatherby Magnum and shoot some 500 grainers! It only features about 100 ft-lbs of recoil, but that's enough to show the 30.06 boys, with 20 ft-lbs of recoil to deal with, who's the real bull-o-the-woods... There's a pretty good chance you'll kill the grizzly with one perfectly placed shot with that 500 grain bullet, but then the 30.06 will do the same thing...without the souvenir on your shoulder!

300 WSM on the small end, preference would be given to a 338 win or bigger. Recoil is not much of a deal with me so I shoot a 340 Wby as my go to rifle. A 300 WSM does not generate that bad of recoil and with good quality bullets such as Barnes or Nosler Part in 180g you are good to go. The best advise is to shoot the biggest caliber that you are comfortable shooting, With a grizzly the first shot is the most important, once those old boys get going you need some serious medicine or luck to stop them. That all said I killed a charging Grizzly at 15 feet with a 270 Win and 160g Imperial bullets (Elk hunting). The shot placement was right where it needed to be and dropped the bear in its tracks. So if the shot placement is right most any medium to large caliber rifle will work but as they say plan for the worst hope for the best and shoot a big bullet when you are hunting dangerous game.

If you want to only use this gun for griz then I would use a 417 with a 220 grain bullet.

If you are using this gun for all big game then use a 338 mag.

Almost without a doubt, more grizzly bears have been killed in BC with the 30-06, than any other calibre.

.270 or 30-06 and up will do just fine.

Hi

Well, here we go again................................:x

Have taken several Black Bears and one Revelstoke Grizzly with a 30-06. The Grizzly dropped for good within 40 meters of being hit at a range of 125 meters.

I use Remington "Core Lokt" 180 grains.

As one member has said over and over: " shot placement is King ! "

Accuracy is the name of the game. Heck, you could use a .22 if you got close enough and fired one in the brain through the eye socket.

You can use the bloody cannon off a Battleship for Grizzly, but if you are accurate a 30-06 is more than ample.

Go to the range alot before hunting Grizzly. Good for the confidence level.;-)

Weatherby Mag besides Roy Weatherby's family?

I once read a book by Jack O'Conner I beleave it was. This has always stuck in the back of my brain for some reason.

A grizzley was shot with a 22-250 the bullet went into the side of the grizzley and hit a rib " conclution 22-250 is to small for a grizzley bear".
The second shot whent into the side of the grizzley sliped through the ribs and took out the heart the grizzley droped dead, "conclution 22-250 is enough gun for grizzley"

Now that said grizzley bears have been killed with a little 22 rim fire. I guess it all depends on the person using the rifle. most guids will sujest using your dear rifle instead of using a magnum rifle that you cant shoot becouse your afraid of the recoil.

Oh ya just make sure you shoot you'r buddy in the leg when you have to out run a charging grizz

 Or you can give the honour of shooting your new .460 Weatherby to your buddy, and if he misses, and the grizz charges, then your buddy will be on his butt rubbing his shoulder while you're halfway back to your truck!

I know a fellow that shoots only Weatherbys and he has a mess of them. I had the experience of firing his .460 (without a muzzle break) with 500 gr. bullets. All I can tell you is at the moment you touch it off you get hit so hard that you had better hope it's a good hit because if you need a follow up shot it aint gonna be easy. One word describes it. Punishing. I would take my .338 win mag any day over that. At least if I need a follow up shot, I know I have a real good chance of making one or two. Some of this stuff is ridiculous to shoot. I personally don't know anyone that thinks that's fun. Not even Mr. Weatherby.

Cabin fever must be running high...

My twobits worth here is:

Shot placement is everything. The better you place the shot the less important the caliber.

The more powerful the cartridge you can accurately shoot (within reason)the better because when things go wrong with bears they go really wrong.
