223, 22-250, 243, 25-06.

The 223 & 22-250 will work on wolf, but the 243 & 25-06 really start to shine if you get a shot past 300 yards.

It's hard to beat the 243 IMO, and it doubles nicely as a deer gun. A 70 gr @ 3500 fps will reach out a long ways and do a nice job on predators, and it's also fairly inexpensive to shoot with lots of ammo & rifle options

6mm remington w/ 22" heavy barrel, HS stock & leupold 4.5-14 with an elevation turret. Been using 75 grain sierras but terrible on hides. 87 grain v-max is much better on hides but does not shoot like the sierras. Been experimenting with 105 a-max's and they seem to shoot really well. 6mm is a good balance between a pure varmint gun and a rifle with enough jam to anchor wolves consistently.

Discreet would be a .22. Any centerfire makes noise, if not sub-sonic..

:D I'd go with a .25-06, nice punch at longer ranges, and good ballistics.

22-250 gets a vote from me, but anything that makes a hole where there wasn't a hole before will work.

I've had good luck on coyotes with 55g excellerators out of my 30-06. But wait! Then you wouldn't need a new gun. LOL

243 gets my vote. Like Bartel says it doubles as a good deer gun. Mike

55gr???!! were did you find load data for that or was that a typo sapose to be a 25-06?

I thought the min was 110gr with the 30-06!!!

Bartell will know!

I have heard the Varmint Granade is alot longer because of the hallow in the projectile, is this the same with the excelerator?

the 55 gr Accelerator is a load Remington makes, it is a 22 cal soft point bullet held in a plastic sabot. Accuracy from what Ive heard is usually mediocre to poor, and price of ammo is about $50 a box.

I also happen to have a 22-250 for sale (m77 all weather). But if you're looking to keep the noise down, don't go with a 22-250. That's one of the reasons it's for sale.

You might be right, haven't used them in a quite a few years. Did get one 'yote at 300yds, head shot, dropped where he stood. Probably clean livin' and good management or just lucky:lol:. At $50 a box I certainly wouldn't buy more.
Oh darn, now I'll have to think about a new gun;). I was thinking of going for bear up Princeton way when it opens. I was going to wack any coyotes I saw as some fellows from there said they have been hard on the deer the year. Maybe 150's for both??

I had this same conversation with a federal rep and he suggested the 243 since I wanted it for wolf also....

No such thing as overkill. Never take a knife to a gun fight.

I like my 22-250. It's very accurate and no recoil. And the shells are cheap. I hand load and the option's for loads are endless and the cost per box is so low i take it to the range all the time just to plink

I go with my .270 with 130's or my .250 savage when I feel nostagic.

243 is what I would choose.

Discreet? maybe a .22 hornet? Or .308 subsonic loads?

Thanks guys for all the info and opinions I will check all those options out and see what I can come up with. I will also look at different bullets for my .30-06 and see if there's a bullet with not so much damaging effects on the fur that I can use on a coyote or wolf.

:D If overkill isn't an issue, and you really want to make sure that the bullet kills the wolf when it hits it...then go for the .460 Weatherby Magnum! 500 grain bullets at 2700 fps stand a pretty fair chance of putting the wolf down if you shoot accurately! Now where are my earmuffs??
