First Muzzleloader Bear
Well, today I planned on heading up past Nitinat with the intention of hunting for a couple days in an area that Bigwhiteys told me about. I loaded my camp gear in the truck and headed out at around 1100 this morning.

I had never been to this area before so I drove in slow, stopping to glass some cuts as I went. The first cut I stopped at, I saw a sow and single cub about 400 yards up. I kept looking and not long after spotted a lone bear at the treeline. It looked quite large compared to the sow. The big one worked the treeline and shortly after I saw it, headed into the bush. I drove further down the road, stopping at the next cut to see another bear looking right at me at around 200 yards. It didn't hang around long and it buggered off at a high rate of speed. I glassed for a while, and moved on. I never got 100 yards down the road and I booted one of the road I was driving on. It headed down into some thick stuff pretty quick.

To this point I had only been at it for around an hour and a half. Obviously the bears were out in numbers, so I parked the truck, got my gear together and headed off on foot.

I stopped and glassed a distant cut for around a half hour or so. After that I kept heading down the road for a couple km's. I hit a straight section of road and stopped to have a look with the bino's. About 70 yards ahead of me I saw the ass end of a bear in the thick stuff on the side of the road. I knelt down and got my muzzleloader ready and waited for around 10 minutes. This guy was pretty happy feeding on grass and wasn't moving. I parked my game cart and my hunting buddy stayed with the cart. The wind was blowing right at me so I got on the same side of the road as the bear and slowly stalked up. I got to around 30 yards and I could still see his rear sticking out. I slowly crossed the road to try and get a good shot angle. I knelt down and got ready. I could of taked him in the front of the left shoulder, but have never shot anything with a muzzleloader before and chose to wait for a better shot. Another minute or so tick by and I feel the wind on the back of my head. Almost instantly the bear stops feeding and looks right at me. He stepped out of the bush and started walking toward me. He got to around 24 yards and stopped. I held my crosshairs on his chest. He stayed there sniffing the air for another moment or so then turned back to his right and stopped to look at me again. I setteled my crosshairs behing his shoulder and pulled the trigger. I couldn't see squat for all the smoke. When it cleared, I could see his rear legs sticking out of the bush.
The adrenaline really hit me at that point and I'm glad I didn't have to take a secon shot as I was shaking pretty good. I went back, got my hunting buddy and my game cart, took some pics, dressed him out and headed for home. A pretty good day and a awesome spot for bears. Thanks to my hunting buddy Buckley for not barking and scaring it away while I stalked in on it and Thanks alot Carl for the tip on the spot. Oh ya, If I can give a plug for Ken, the maker of Sasquatch Pac Karts in Keremeos. Great product

Not much of a story, we were road hunting and spotted him about 250 yards away on a grassy slope, stopped the truck and walked up to about 100 yards from it and took a shot. It instantly ran across the road and I took another shot at it while it was running and missed. We found it in some dead fall in a creek 20 yards from where it was shot. Lung shot breaking rib in and out 30 06 180 grain mrx. White fat, smells good, making some hams and sausage this weekend.

Edit: Butchered and BBQ'd the back straps today and it's tasty! Had my family over and all including the kids were begging for more. All I did was rub some montreal steak spice on the butterflied steaks and soak them in budweiser for an hour, mmmmmmm!

My first entry, with hopefuly one more to follow.

Shooting the bear was the easy part, finding him was the tough part. The hit looked good and he took off into the thick bush. A half minute later I heard a loud crashing about seventy yards in and to my left. That sounded about right, so I went looking for my arrow. It took half an hour to find the arrow and confirm by the blood on it that the hit should be good. It was eight-thirty PM by now and heavily overcast, so light was fading.
I could find no blood on several of the probable escape routes and I kept up the search untill dark, in a fan shaped grid pattern. When I couldn't see any more I knew I'd have to come back the next day. It was cold enough that I wasn't worried about spoilage.

I got off work early the next day and headed back to find my bear. After almost three hours of searching, I'd turned up zero sign. The area is thick with deadfall and brush, and a bit swampy with large spruce to make it gloomy. Many times I returned to the shot sight and followed likely routes. There was still enough snow in the bush that I should have encountered his tracks by now. One more time back to the start, staying much closer to the beginning. By now I was just slowly wandering and zig-zagging, poking into brush and deadfall. Then all of a sudden, there he was, in plain sight, right infront of me! Not forty yards from where the arrow had zipped through both lungs but much more to the right of where I had heard the crashing the previous night. I still don't know if it was something else I heard or if the sound echoed back from the big trees in that direction.

He had made one fast mad dash after the shot and about thirty yards in, he had leaped over a very long spruce laying across his path. He died a few yards past that in a little hollow. Every time I walked in, I had went around either end of that big spruce blow down, walking within twenty feet of him several times. There was no blood anywhere except where he lay. He had moved so fast and his fur was thick enough to soak up any blood that might have given me a trail to follow.

I did the skinning, cutting, packing and got home late. And as usual my wife woke up just enough to question my sanity. Life is good.

Well here's my story.

Work called me very early in the morning May 13/09 and told me works slow stay home today so I said sure never really had a choice.
The wife left early as well to quickly go to work and finish off paper work for pay roll and then she came home just after I got off the phone with a coffee in her hand for me.

I told her work called and told me to stay home, and she asked what we were going to do today. Well she doesn't really like to go hunting so I asked her if we can go for a hike up a mountain in region 2 and she hesitated for a sec then said yes. I told her I was going to take my rifle for safety reasons and she thought nothing of it. I told her it was in case we encountered a bear.

LOL well we got to the top of the mountain and by this time she new what I was up to, creeping up the mountain, and being quiet, checking around and looking for fresh signs..lol she's not stupid. Any who we got to the top of the mtn and just as I told her ok we can be as loud as we want to be now, I saw some thing moving in the corner of my left eye and looked and sure as shi* it was a black bear. I've never taken one before so I didn't know what to expect but I wanted to take one to add to my list of things I've wanted to do and accomplished. Also people I know have been bugging me for bear meat.

So with out thinking I told my wife to be quite and get down, I took aim and fired.... crap I was so pumped I missed.... I wont lie it was a rushed shot so I reloaded and fired again. WHAT THE FUC* that couldn't have been a miss again. The bear didn't do any thing the first shot. The second shot she stood up and looked right at us and then once again started to feed. I told myself slow down so I reloaded again, took aim and took a breath and bang let loose a 180grn bullet and dropped her. She rolled down a little hill and expired right there.

Must say what a rush it was and how lucky I am to have my wife there by my side to experience the whole thing. Little did I know she caught the whole thing on video. I found out when we got home. To cool, we also took some pics.

Here's the pics, oh and because it's my first bear the wife said I can send it to the taxidermy. To freaking cool now to the pics oh by the way my height is 5'9 that should give you an idea of the size of my first bear.

First Preditor Kill
I went out today, February 9/09 region 2, and shot my first coyote, which expired at 9am. I arrived at my spot at around 7:30am, got comfy and started to do some calls. With out noticing, I found that I started to doze off almost reaching a full sleep state. After some time, my right ear started ringing so I peeked open my eyes, sat up and looked to my left...nothing was there. With my eyes still half shut I looked over to my right and saw some thing moving up towards me. My eyes sprung open, my heart started racing out of my chest and I kept on telling myself.... "wait... wait...calm down...control your breathing." I then found myself in an almost tunnel vision state which I'm sure most of you fully understand. Then I looked through my scope took aim and he went out of sight... "Crap" I thought. I looked back up but couldn't see him and I thought I blew my chance. Then, to my surprise, his head poped up... then his whole body... he then started to come at me. At about 80 yards I again looked in through the scope, and bang. I don't know if it was just my hunters instincts or what, but I knew that shot wasn't right. She jumped up and ran about 3 feet, stood still and was looking around. At that point I realized I missed so I took aim again, calmed myself down again, did everything I could to control my breathing and heart rate and popped off another shot... "BANG". This time it hits its mark and she goes down. Now here she is, hope you like.

Well I got my hunter number in Janurary, and headed out on my first hunting trip last week. since i am a total hunting NOOB, i went with my uncle, up in the McBride area. I am thinking we were about a week early cause we did not see many bears at all.... anyways we saw this guy on our 3rd day, and decided to take him. i was aiming for his left shoulder, but ended up taking him in the neck, and he dropped in his tracks. hide measured out at an even 7 feet, and the skull an even 19 inches... he was a lot bigger up close than we thought he was. Shot him with a .300 win mag at about 130 yards. i hope these pictures work! for reference i am 6'0" and 200 lbs

I spent the day at the range with my 223 and .300wm on friday. Im recovering from a head and shoulder injury, so i though what could be a better way than to spend the day sitting down on a bench...

On the way home i had a funny feeling, so i decided to stop off at my backwoods site to see if there was any bear scat yet. On my way up the road, i came around the corner to see a 5'5" blackie walking away from me down the road.
Out i jumped, clip in, cycle the bolt, and i took aim. My hands were shaking like i had 12 cups of coffee, so i took a prone position. the bear was walking away from me and was not providing a decent shot. i though damn, he's going to walk over the hill and not give me a broadside shot. At that moment he turned 90 and started walking towards the edge of the bank/road. I took a deep breath, touched off a round. Bear flinched and jumped then jumped over the bank. CRASH CRASH CRASH CRASH...... seeing as my shoulder is still buggered (not my shooting shoulder) i phoned my hunting partner, and a few friends as i knew i needed some help with this one...
(BTW i was shooting the .300wm with my handloaded barnes tsx 150 grains, med powder load)
I found the bear 100ft down a 30 degree bank. so he was gutted, and then we used a 2:1 pulley system to hoist him up. when we got closer to the road, we used one vehicle as a redirect and the other to pull bear up the bank...
The shot was perfect, hitting a rib on the way in, hitting the bottom of one lung , the top half of the heart, out another rib and then through his arm bone. a clean through shot. (too bad i couldnt see the bullet after it did its work) In reflection and judging by the bowling ball look of the shrubs that he made on his way down. im pretty sure that he took 2-3 steps then tumbled down the bank.

he measured about 6feet from rear feet to nose and prob about 250-300 lbs

me and hounddogger went for an evening hunt. spotted three bears in the same field. put up the binos and the bear at the far end of the field looked to be a big bear. the other two were just average sized bears. we made a game plan for our stalk and started to go. just as we started the big bear went back in the timber so we decided to take one of the other bears. started walking and decided to dip into the timber and walk a trail that should bring us out right were we needed. just as we were going into the trail the big bear came back out. so we went on the trail and came out about 30 yards away from the average bear that was feeding on some grass. started doing the belly crawl and he went into the timber which worked perfectly cause we belly crawled within 80 yards of the monster. took a minute to relax, put the cross hairs on him and BOOM!! my 300 win mag did the job as it stopped him in his tracks. walked up to him and was impressed by his size. he was 7' from nose to tail and 7'7'' from paw to paw. hounddogger caped him out so i can get a rug. the skull should go high 19 to low 20. by far my biggest bear. thank you hounddogger.

Took a new hunter out for his first bear this weekend, showed him 3, and gave him the first right of refusal. After his second shot, at the third bear, I had to walk alone to the right place and right time around a corner and make a lucky standing freehand shot on a nice meat bear. Such a fun hunt. Can't wait to fill my second tag. Saw 6 bears in 6 hours. Pictures should be up in the morning.

Well here's an entry . This nice blackie is off the S.V.I during the rut. He was with a sow, and was sitting facing us drooling in a slash just looking big and ornery. He gave up a nice shot opportunity with my hunting buddy pounding on a predator call, one shot form a 7mm rem mag did the trick.

Hide squared 7'11", skull should go 23"

There were 26 entries in total for the contest.

I'm surprised to see that we didn't get more wolves or cougars in the contest, but whatever...

We only had 4 prize donations this time around, so I didn't set up specific categories like archery, youth, biggest bear, etc. The winners will be done by random number draw. I have the names and corresponding numbers, and I am just waiting for another mod to draw the numbers.

2 of the prizes are charter fishing trips, so I am surprised we didn't get more entries, but that makes the odds better for those that did!

Okay people.....Draw has been completed.

The 4 winners are (drum roll please)........................................... .....

1 todbartell

2 gbear

3 showtimebc

4 electryckdyck

So..........this is how it works. In numerical order the members get to pick from the prize list on page 1.

So Bartell.......have at it.....after Bartell chooses than gbear gets to pick and so on. Last choice is electryckdyck.

Post up in the thread what you choose people and the mods will make sure you get your prize.

Thanks to all that donated and thanks for all the entries..........I enjoyed reading about all of them.

Wow, right on! I haven't checked this thread in a long time.

I would love to go on that other fishing trip, but unfortunately for me, the odds of me getting to the coast in the near future are slim to none. Especially with hunting season starting in the Peace very soon. So, I think I will leave that to one of the other folks that will actually be able to get some use out of that.

I'll take the bear hunting book and DVD set.

Thanks!
