I'm completely new to hunting. studying my books and hoping to take the test soon. I need advice on what to do when starting up, where to get starter supplies.. rifle, clothing ect.. and where to find people to hunt with. I used to be on a range team as a kid so I'm a good shot with a .22. I've shot pretty much every type of gun while in redneck Arkansas but not a lot of shooting. I'm a big guy, 6'1" 200lbs so I can handle most rifles. but other than Gophers in Alberta, I've never really hunted before. I was thinking of starting small, birds, duck ect.. since I only have a civic right now a deer may be difficult.
please help!!!

Thanks!

if you are buying a gun just to hunt with I would suggest a shotgun

you can hunt all small game and waterfowl with one

if you are wanting something that you can go out and have some cheap fun then a .22 would be more to your liking

you can hunt small game with them but not waterfowl

hope that gets you started in the right direction

you dont need any other special gear when grouse and rabbit hunting but for ducks and geese you may want to get into some camo

P.S.
It may also help letting people now what region your in so they can make some better suggestions as to where to go for equuipment and supplies and who knows maybe even hunting areas

Become a member of your local Fish & Game Club and get involved. That way you will meet many other hunters to guide you on the way to hunting success. Spend as much time in the bush and learn just by observing wildlife and study their behavior and daily routines.

If you only want to hunt small game, waterfowl and upland birds a pump action shotgun with interchangeable choke tubes is all you need.

Welcome to the fray, like already mentioned, let us know where you hang your hat, one of us may be willing to help hands on if your close.

The gun club idea is a great one too.

Hahahaha! I was thinking more, trunk related storage.....

A tarp and a little work and they fit right in the trunk as well. I've hauled a couple deer home in the trunk of my '87 Accord, which is basically the same size as some of the newer Civics. Just don't stick one in there still steaming and leave it there for hours in hot weather.

Using a car limits how far you can drive off main roads, but with some good planning, it doesn't need to prevent you from hunting.

Don't worry about the car. I once had a black bear in the trunk of a 1971 Toyota Corona. A blacktail buck in the same trunk on another occasion.

Another time I saw a guy and his dog in a Honda civic in the ferry line-up with a big bull moose rack on the roof rack and most of the meat in the car.
