afternoon sled ride today

been sicker than a dog the last three weeks and pretty much stuck inside but I got out for a look this afternoon...stumbled on this

place littered with coyote and bird sign however kinda doubt a pack of coyotes did this eh?

headed up the hill past an old calf moose kill

and on the way back another young deer kill

I saw this kill the day before and believe it was coyotes on a very sick fawn.
Our deer are taken a hit this winter again.

Its that time of the year when the deer are at there weakest point from the winter this is maybe why the deer was killed by the yots.

That is true, between now and green-up is the time when most animals die, the extent of the winter kill will depend significantly on how long winter lasts from this point on now that the critter's winter fat reserves are nearly used up.

Saw some deer feeding on some haybales in a field in Little Fort on Friday. 2 fawns looked really really bad. Drove past the same field on Monday, one fawn carcus laying in the field with ravens pickin the bones. They definately are getting hit hard this winter. Lots of carcus' around.

it would be very difficult because this MU has tracked vehicle closure and no plowed roads...basicaly cannot hunt with a sled.

I have been finding them starved since January....

this young buck and his twin hunkered down here for a month and a half....I thought he would have been dead at the time a took the pic..his twin died a week before he did... I checked on them a couple times a week for they were just above the highway in that time another deer died as well but I had not been watching it...just pulled up on the shoulder and honked to see if he would lift his head...two weeks ago while heading to town a eagle was sitting on him.
